    From the Inq:

CHIP GIANT Intel is being very mysterious about its next generation microprocessor, the Prescott. So mysterious, in fact, that we suspect that it isn't quite sure what its future plans are itself, life has been so exciting lately.

The firm tells us today of the fine distinctions between an "availability" date, a "revenue earning" date, and a "launch date".

Intel said Prescott will generate revenues during Q4 of this year, but that appears to be, as far as we can judge, a matter of it stocking up its customers, its OEMs with Prescott microprocessors. This is the "availability" and the "revenue earning" date, we suppose.

More dates here than in a grove of palms in Morocco.

The 2nd of December – it claims – will not be the "launch date" of the Prescott. And while several motherboard manufacturers told us at Computex that they expected availability in November, that might not be the "launch date" either.

Seems neither AMD or Intel have much to shout about at the moment.

Intel has heat problems and AMD has yet to produce a processor much over 2Ghz. In addition there was a time when you could buy an AMD and get 95% of the performance for 50% of the price of an intel, sadly, not any more.

All kinds of new technology coming out.

Wait a few months and let things stabilise and they will probably go back to almost where it was before.

With Intel going for clock speed and AMD for price-performance.

Not planning or doing any upgrading for a fair while now anyway, as I am saving for a digital camera.

Yes, I think you're right, it's definately not a time to splash out on a major upgrade until the fog has cleared a bit.

If the New form factor BTX motherboards and card interfaces like PCI-X are introduced they will render nearly all your existing hardware, including cases, AGP graphics cards and any PCI cards, obsolete in one fell swoop.

Of course the Athlon 64 needs a 0.09 makeover and that probably won't happen till 2005. Prescott is a mild core improvement to tide Intel over to Tejas.

It isn't that much faster, it is vastly overpriced and requires registered memory to work. Companies only start shouting if they make a profit and there is nothing about the FX that will do that.

When I bought my XP2200+ it was AMD's top of the range single processor and cost me around £140.00 as far as I can remember.

The new top of the range Athlon FX 51 is around £650.00, or around 4.5 times the price. Is it 4.5 times faster than my XP2200 - no, what the hell happened to More's law with this processor?

Technically, Moore’s law applies to transistor density. I think that the prices will get realistic when the market gets a chance to adjust (Supply/Demand)
