I'm running a athlon 1Gig, its temps are 37 on idle and about 39 on full whack, in a lian li pc60 case so its all cool. Randomly it would seem, sometimes the pc stays up for 25 hours, sometimes 25mins it locks up, screen goes on standby and pc stops dead, completly unresponsive. By using LCDC with my 204 i can tell its uptime and it varies a great deal. Its been doing this for maybe a month now, to restart i have to do a hard reboot, hold in the power button for a few seconds and it turns off, wait a couple then turn on again, if i turn on too quick the hdd's dont spin up. When it locks up the fans keep going, lights stay on, not a flicker from anything, the hdd light goes red, the power light stays blue, its bixarre. I thought maybe a PSU problem, interupting the power to the CPU so it stops dead but its weird everything inside the case works, cpu fan etc off mobo headers, all fine. I run win2kpro, if anyone has any ideas, pls letme know, the psu is a sparkle and is only about 4 months old but i modded it so bang goes that warranty. Thanks for any thoughts, i'm at the stage of argh!!!! pieco c*** and kickin it, wonderin maybe hdd error, i defragged and checked, no probs... well anyway, ty

i cant really think of much ...

it could be alot of things really, may be a conflict...

have you got another system around the same type of hardware where you can debug each individual peice of hardware ?

... no, didnt think so ... lol ....

ummmm, does the screen freeze or go blank ?

can you still do things like open the CDROM tray ?

    little be more information...

does it lock up when your doing something in particular or does it lock up even when the system is idle ?

the PS must be taken under consideration but, if it was the PS it would be unlikely for fans to spin and LEDs to operate...

its one of those problems you need to be there to help, like to debug.

    good luck,

If the PS was dead then nothing would come on...but if your using a 250w PS that comes with alot of cases, and have alot of drives, cards, cc lights, etc.. your putting alot of strain on that PS. I've seen people put 4 HD's and fill every pci slot in their case with a cheapo PS and they wondered why win would bluescreen (later i found out that 2 HD's would actually power down and up again because the power supply couldn't handle the load :eeek:) I don't think its a bad PS...just one that can't handle the load...just a thought :D

    that could be the problem...

Puk, if you have lots of HDDs or alot of PCI cards, try removing them for a bit and see if it fixes the problem.

Not related much to this issue, but I know everyone says you need a huge power supply although I had all this running off a 150w mATX...

    Iwill XP333
    512mb DDR
    2x Maxtor 60gb
    1x IBM 30gb
    1x Maxtor 10gb
    V5 5500
    SB Live
    Modem
    LAN
    SCSI Card
    4 case fans
    Big CPU fan (titan?)
    CDRW
    DVD

I had it up all day, no problems whatsoever!

Anyway, back to the prob, couple of suggestions -

Are all your cards seated properly, could they move?
    Is your RAM seated properly?
Have you tried changing the drivers or reinstalling windows?

Sorry for the late reply, my router went down and couldn't replace the hdd with current funds but now back online.

Ok to answer a few questions:
    My System:
    300W Sparkle PSU
    1Gh Athlon
    MSI K7t Pro mobo
    32meg Creative GeForce 2mx
    32x CDRW LiteOn
    4x DVD
    Twin Maxtor 40gig 5400 hdd's
Running in a LianLi PC60 with lots of cooling, running about 3 metres of EL wire and a UV cc and a NK204.
Idle temps of around mid 30's and load of around 39.

The PC stays with lights on, fans going, LED's working, power to the 204 (screen goes static) nothing works, CD trays dont open reset doesn't work. The monitor goes onto standby (clicks off) and no i dont have any power saving modes on. It locks up randomly, anything from 20 mins to 20 hours, PSU is about 6 months old but it wouldn't be unusual for psu's to fek up i spose, its one of those things but atm i dont have the funds to replace it. I dont believe its a windows prob as i was doing some stuff before windows started, checkdisk and stuff (using 2k) and thats before everything in windows starts and logs in etc and it locked up then.

Again, sorry for the late replys, thanks for the responses so far.

    Matt

I would say the psu as well, running that lot off a 300 watt is pushing it.

My theory would be a faulty motherboard. Faulty motherboards I have found often cause the machine to reset spontaneously, and on resetting fail to POST. I would say it is either that, or the PSU.

I've had the mobo for about a year half now and have been happy with the system till about a month ago when it started doing this, you really think running all that off 300W is a lot? I wouldn't know and shall take your word for it, it hung on boot just now, well i say boot, it was just logging into win, so had been up for like two minutes tops, really weird, everything stays on but non responsive to anything, it turns off by the power button but not the reset and you have to hold the power button in for a couple of seconds....

If you can try just running it with a cd rom and 1 hard drive and disconnect the rest i.e the other hd and dvd, neon etc. If its stable then its you psu, if not your going to have look elsewhere.

Increase core voltage a little. See if that helps matters.

Why should i increase the voltage its been running for over a year perfectly happy at what it is now so why the need now? I've unplugged the EL wire and the cc, i expect it shall still go down though its being such a bitch, trying to reply to this thread its gone down twice!!!! unbelieveable, yet sometiems it'll stay up for hours almost days etc, takes the michael so i appologise for any typos i daren't check it lest the pc goes down. i hope its the psu i really can't afford a new mobo, student one and a half k in debt plus student loan, i'm screwed, maybe build up the 266 tomorrow, this is hell. Thanks for the help, i'll go get a generic psu prolly soon, what sixe do you think, like 400watt or somet just for safety, obviously no point in a 300, stupid thing (sorry been down the pub and q ****ed already and this doesn't help right now).

tanks for all your input guys, i really do hope its the psu, i can shell out 20 quid for a new one to get me by for the time being, but mobo! no way, not atm. all advice on the matter well apprectiacted, keep it comin if there is anymore. cheers again

Oh, btw, if i increase the core voltage, what do i increase it by, i dont know the default for a 1gig athlon as in my bios it has the options of default and then other voltages, if you knows thatd be cool, else i'll look into oc'ing another time when we're more stable.

Default should be 1.75v. I you do decide to try increasing it just do it by the smallest amount possible at first then go up slightly from there if need be. Even the smallest increase could help stability so it may be worth a try! Don't forget that it will increase the heat though!

    well it aint the psu!!!!

Updating my old thread, bought a new psu today, 350watt job and still same old Fe**ing problem happens, takes the p*ss really does, ugh!

Any more ideas? i dont understand why i should have to change the core voltage when the cpu has been stable untill this problem for nearly a year and never been oc'd.

Windows problem anyone thinks? A reinstall could be in order to solve it i guess, other than that i'm outta ideas and would have to tend towards my mobo being buggered, doubt it would be a hdd, well, couldbe, no dont see why or how it should be. Not a happy chappy right now! ugh.
