The top says 50 GB on a single disc, but the "product features" say 8.5 GB on a dual layer disc. It also estimates four hours of video.

    Blu-ray drive

"Revel in the crisp clarity of high-definition video with this recordable Blu-ray Disc drive that can record up to 50GB of HD content to a single disc. "

    &

"Records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video on compatible DVD+R DL (double layer) and DVD-R DL (dual layer) media"

Also, if you wanted to make a media center PC with this drive then will it be possible to record and view content from the cable company's HDTV converter? There seems to be no mention of people doing this.

Sorry mate but I don't see where the confusion is. atanum has it exactly correct, it does DVD, DVD-DL, and now Blue Ray.
Exactly as it says on the tin, as they say.
Just different recording types just like when Dual Layer first came out.

As for the HTPC question, might be best to post in that section and/or read up on general HTPC stuff.
I'm not very up to date with that stuff but I'd say as long as you have an input compatible with HDTV signals in your computer you should be able to do Hard Drive recording.
Burn to your spiffy Blue Ray disks at your leisure.

side note: Newegg has that drive for $50 cheaper and also has useful info like that you have to have an HDCP video card to watch BR disks.
