THE UK Government is to combat the early sexualization of children by blocking internet pornography unless parents request it, it was revealed today.

The move is intended to ensure that children are not exposed to sex as a routine by-product of the internet. It follows warnings about the hidden damage being done to children by sex sites.

The biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, are being called to a meeting next month by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, and will be asked to change how pornography gets into homes.

Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called "opting out" - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to "opt in."

The new initiative is in advance of the imminent convergence of the internet and television on one large screen in the living room.

It will use the same technology that is being used to block child porn.

My view is are parents so useless these days that they can't take any responsibility ?

We have parental settings, child friendly browsers that only link to safe and checked links why do Isp's have to step in.

Sounds like a way of torpedoing a nationwide firewall, tbh.

    Surely this won't go ahead?

The coalition was meant to (at least they said they were meant to!) be breaking down the anti-libetarian policies and ideologies that plagued Labour.

I could understand Labour doing something like this since they did seem to think that they knew better than parents, individuals, households, companies, etc etc. But for a supposedly libetarian coalition?

Can't see it happening personally, since this would essentially amount to a China-esque firewall (albeit blocking different material; but the principle is the same).

So how do I opt in?

Ryu - that's a song from a Broadway/West End musical called Avenue Q, very very funny show. That growly male voice is the Trekkie Monster.

I noticed that we are treated like brainless zombies. It's like politicians knows better what you need, what you want and what you can do. This is just strange. Sure, there are people that are so stupid they can't think for themselves. But most of us don't fall in that category.

This is pretty worrying. The less government control of the internet the better. If they can stop me looking at porn, what's to say they can't stop me looking at political documents they don't want me to see?

Actually right now, the government has the capability to filter traffic nationwide - remember that whole furore with the Scorpions album cover?

Foil hat alert: I suspect this is more a way to get people used to the idea that traffic being filtered is par for the course.

I just can't imagine how they'll ever be able to enforce this. Porn is such a huge portion of the internet, there's no way they can blacklist every site. Besides, even if they do, what about torrents? Or even resorting to Google image search? Completely unenforceable, complete waste of time/money. I'd bet the porn industry would have something to say about losing a fair chunk of their UK income from people ashamed to phone up their ISP and ask for access to porn.

Opt-out I could understand, if parents want to restrict access then fair enough. But opt-in? I doubt that'll catch on, frankly!

This makes no sense at all. The only people this could possibly benefit are parents who are technologically inept, and if you can't change the settings on your router or install some software on a kid's computer there's no way you'll be able to block VPNs, proxies, torrents, file hosting sites and all the other easily accessible ways for kids to get porn. People seem to be underestimating the ability of children to get around these restrictions.

Ed Vaizey is a f****** idiot. The sooner more people realise this the better. I want to know how much he got in donations for his comments on net neutrality.
