ok, pipex are just crap tbh, they have set my internet at 1.6mbps even though i have phoned up BT and they have said i can recieve 2.5 down my line.

sp why cant pipex use this? are BT just being the bully and not offering me a higher speed because i Choose pipex?

my net has had the 10 day trial run, yet i seem to be re setting the route all the time because the net dies. this is driving me insane and i am really considering going elsewhere

im really fed up tbh becuase i am willing to spend £50 a month on internet and all they can offer is 1.6mb i didnt think the area i was in would be only able to recive 1.6 this is crap

Are bulldog good? i am after an internet provider who can give me more than 3mbps

i have also just heard about interleaving and this can directly affect ping in games. this is all very confusing and im annoyed tbh

can anyone help / offer alternative broad band providers

There's some evidence from the second statement that Pipex are right. I assume you've moved to MAX.

If this is true, and happens to my line I will have to seriously consider not having the internet at home for a year.

While your ISP can limit your connection speed, it's ultimately BT that set your maximum speed. It may be the case that no ISP (using a BT line) can provide 3Mbps+

Yes is does affect your ping, however it is not turned on by default on new provisions (afaik) *. Your ISP has to ask BT to turn this on and off. It's kinda similar to ECC RAM, it adds extra error checking at the expense of latency and therefore is commonly turned on on lines experiencing browsing/connectivity problems.

    * - I'm not so sure about this now...

Have you ever considered getting a cable ISP (like blueyonder) because they'll get you 10Mbps garunteed and you'll be paying less than £50 a month (IIRC blueyonders 10Mbps package is £30 a month).

in response to Dougs issue....i wold say it looks like its saying their internal network isn't allowing your connection to the rest of the internet becuase their network is to busy, your using a test account or they have a problem with their equipment that prevents you request getting through.

well we can elminate the test account and the network problems because you say you've been browsing and it'll come up randomly so it leaves the only one that makes sense with the situation, their network must just be to busy.

could be to do with contention ratios on the line, maybe they were acceptable before but as more and more people get connected and are online more they mabe too high.

I would love to have gotten cable, but they don't supply my area.

I'm beginning to get severely pissed off with the internet now.

I would understand that if it was down ALL the time. But not on various websites at various times.

Try NTL. I have a 2mb line which has never been down nor had any speed/connection problems. They even do free upgrades now and again :D

I know this is a very old thread, but I have been having this problem recently and wondered if Doug found a solution, or if anyone has any idea what is happening.
    Thanks::wallbash:

Have you tried going to the forums on Think Broadband? They are full of people with all sorts of knowledge about all sorts of things to do with t'interweb.

I use Entanet (via the UKFSN reseller) and I find them to be very transparent and stable.

Thanks, Doug and Andy. I think we'll be leaving Orange.

I thought of moving to them, but heard they'd become victims of their popularity and had got rather overloaded. I got a "free" upgrade from Pipex to 8Mb, the line is perfectly stable, no real complaints on speed, and I get free (if slow) Giganews newsgroup access which Entanet don't do, and cheaper phone calls. They charged me when I went over my cap, which I suppose is better than throttling me. Still a shite attitude to customers though.
