Just sent off an application for my first job earlier today. Got a telephone interview now tommorow. Cacking it a bit, as I'm not great on the phone, especially when its someone I don't know.
Just relax and take that extra second or two before you answer any questions and you will be fine. Good luck mate
You'll be fine, just have a think about some of the questions they may ask and get some answers ready tonight. What's the job for?
Great minds think alike. Srsly, dress in a suit and tie for the phone call, you'd be amazed at how it changes your mind frame. And imagine the other person naked.
Imagine the other person is naked, but if its a woman...Make sure you get a...*Cough*...You know what I mean... But on a serious level, you'll be fine. Just be confident! (Not Cocky! ;D)
Rehearse a few typical questions and answer the call in your bath with a muscle relaxing shower gel, that should ease your tension . Joking aside, you will be OK. Interviews are not as bad as they are set out to be. Like everyone else has said, think positively and relax and everything will go as planned .
Have questions ready for them, this shows you're actively interested in the company, the role, and how you can develop yourself to help them. Try and be relaxed about it, but at the time make sure you bring across your passion for it. And most of all, don't sound like a needy teenager chasing the 'girl of his dreams'. Good luck bud!
This. Also, do a spot of investigation into the company and (if possible) try to frame the odd question on something specific to the company. It'll show you've done your research and have spent some time thinking about it. Best of luck!
Thanks for the tips people. I've done some preperation, written down a little bit about myself (bloody hard that), the company is relatively new, and they've not got much on their website yet. I think I'm ready,
Done. Wasn't too bad. Wasn't too formal, which was good. Its just I'm not very good when put on the spot, my brain turns to jelly,
Got offered a face to face interview, . Wasn't entirely sure, as I know I'm not brill on the phone, and my answers aren't always as concise over the phone. But I obviously did alright. Helps that its in the area of gaming that I am most passionate about and have lots of opinions on how other developers have done things, Am I relieved,
Congrats bud! Face to Face interviews are very much about making sure your story flies and you have the skills, but it also very much about seeing if you are the kind of person who would fit in the team. They mostly judge this by thinking, "Would I get on with this person?" Sounds like you brought yourself across as someone who knows what they are doing, and has industry knowledge for automobiles. Keep up the good work and keep us posted!
No industry knowledge here, just a vast geeky encyclopedia of cars and a knack for setting up how a car to handle how I want it to. Pretty much all of which has been self taught. Just a graduate with a first class degree in games programming, I should be able to impress even more at a face to face as I'll be more comfortable and be able to show off what I can really do. Gone from butterflies vomiting in my stomach to being really excited. Thanks for all the kind words guys.
You've obviously got the skills but also bear in mind they are looking for someone who fits their profile (i.e. adaptable, sense of humour etc). Be yourself but check out their person specification/role profile and find out what they are looking for and bear that in mind. Since this is your first interview, a few tips: research the company, have questions to ask them, don't say anything negative, think about what they will ask you, in particular what are your strength and weaknesses. Also likely to be asked is why you want to work for them and where do you want to see yourself in 5 years. Good luck! P.S. Be careful about showing off, you don't want to appear cocky, just knowledgeable!
