Don't look at me like i am an iOS user... I have the iPod and Macbook just because i am learning iOS programming. My main phone is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the backup device is Samsung Omnia 7 . Anyway, i am pretty sure iOS navigation software developers are now happy as never before, i expect a huge demand of their products now that Apple fubar their own maps. Maybe sometime around iOS 9 we will be able to talk about usable maps.
I don't look at iOS users, they* are akin to sheep and thus uninteresting to me, for I am not Welsh. *No, not all of them. Just most. Mainly the evangelical ones.
Reactions on a tech forum are not really the reactions from the general population though. If one person complains for an apple product it gets so blown outta proportion its just funny. How many of us comenting here even own an apple product. Developers are the backbone of any platform, for any platform hoping to over take Andriod or Ios they need to get the backing of the major developers and its not going to happen if the numbers dont add up. Considering Iphone 5 just sold 5million in 3 days i think we can say who the Devs will be sticking with for now. This is what windows phone has to compete agaist.
Actually, the maps issue is well covered even in mainstream media. And 5 million sales... Probably 4,5 million of those are people upgrading from iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
So true. The figures speak for themselves, if you want to make money writing apps for mobile devices then write them for iOS first and foremost. The average iOS user is willing to pay more per app, they purchase more apps and they pirate less apps. As there's more money in the platform you get a greater number of higher quality apps, either exclusive to iOS or they hit the OS first. It's the vast majority of the profit in the sector is locked up with the Apple ecosystem. Apple make ££, the devs make ££. For developers it's Win + Win + Win + Win. I'm not in any way knocking android or MS, I'm just stating things how they are currently. Android's great but the reason it succeeded is because it offers an alternative to iOS with a slight twist (Traditionally less restrictions & lower cost). It was also popular with some simply because it wasn't from Apple. Old Joke: Q: I want an iPhone but it's too expensive, and I'm not sure about Apple. Are there any alternatives? A: There's an Android device. Q: Android? What's it like? A: It's kinda like an iPhone only it's not by Apple. Q: Not by Apple? That's exactly what I was looking for.
IOS 6 new maps are pretty, for sure, however they've missed the point! When I used maps on my iPhone I wanted to see one route and for the app to work as a map only. What Apple created can be better described as a text GPS navigator, which was of secondary use on Google maps. May be I got used to Google maps, but I found it very hard to start using Apple's maps :-/ I ought to mention that on my route to uni Google maps tried to kill me by taking me on the dual carriageway with no footpath, something Apple doesn't seem to do
Galaxy S3 evangelists remind me of the people who try to be all alternative and individual by dressing exactly the same. "Not a sheep" - you and the millions of others who all have the same phone...
I don't own any apple products. But it has been demonstrated to me enough on this forum other internet sites and local news to see that apple has come out with an inferior alternative to google maps. By doing so, has inconvenienced its users, especially in areas where support is poor. It comes across as dismissing its customers needs to fulfil it's own business agenda. I think that's worth calling a company out on. Even the most ardent fan boy has to see this as a premature move.
As I've said before all apple cares for is profit and if its map app is such heartache it would of seen less uptake than has been iOS according to latest reports is between 45% uptake ( google ios version stats )and that can't be pure iphone 5 sales. If this maps was a huge issue surely less would of upgraded.
That doesn't account for the folks who upgraded in spite of, not because of the maps. Or my technologically clueless friend who updated facebook simply saying "what happened to my maps?" Still, if you're an Apple diehard and want to show your support, you can report problems with the maps as you find them. To add points of interest, Apple maps uses Yelp. Want to put a place on the map? Review it!
Are you absolutely sure? Have you been with him 24/7 ever since he was born? I am of course jesting. Or am I?
