    I thought this was just a joke but he goes through everything and it's ridiculous how close he gets to the finished product

    I don't get it.

    Man uses shapes to make other shapes.

    You could do that with almost any program that allows drawing of shapes.

    Dear god... I can't even put one picture next to some text in word without it (a) freaking out and/or (b) moving all the text somewhere else and/or (c) stuff just disappearing completely...

    Very impressive...

    The same tutorials exist for Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Basically any software with image-editing and vector-shape capabilities can be used to create stuff like that.

    Basically Word is a pretty powerful (if not exactly the most user-friendly) package. I can knock up pretty sophisticated graphics with Paint.Net also.
