How's your data connectivity at the moment? I haven't had access to visual voice mail, GPRS or EDGE on my phone since the weekend. Neither has my mate on his iPhone. We're both in Northampton. It's fine on WiFi - it's just the O2 mobile data stuff. Anybody else? Is this just a local issue, or is it country wide? Could it be a precursor to the rumoured second comming of the phone next Monday? Ta, GOO
My GF and I are on o2 - her with a "normal person's phone" (as she calls it), and myself with the wonder that is the iPhone. We did notice that on saturday, at her house, we got no signal at all for data, and for about 30 minutes no signal whatsoever. After it came back on, I saw no change, but she was able to connect to 3G when she wasn't able to before. Instantly this made me start getting all excited, thinking this could be routine network upgrades to pre-empt the 3G iphone launch that everyone is expecting at the WWDC next week. As a side note - has anyone with an iPhone had any thought about what will happen when the 3G model comes out? As in - I wonder whether it will be possible to buy the new handset and use it on your existing iPhone tarrif with o2?
I'm not saying there's no 3G iPhone coming, but O2 had to upgrade their network to 3G because they were getting a lot of bad press for it, they were already behind the schedule for upgrading, and Ofcom were going to fine them £40m if they hadn't done it by the end of June. I only used to get EDGE in Oxford, but now it's finally been upgraded to 3G and (even better than that) HSDPA!
This could be a coincidence, but this was posted on the Mac rumours site: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=490327
I still live in an area where moving across my room takes me from a full signal to one bar. I love O2 in the south :S
I had signal problems so just turned phone off and on again and now it's back to normal, housemates phone still doesn't work but he hasn't restarted it yet (despite me telling him)
Well they could easily do some sort of deal for the current iPhone users that bought the phone on the 9th, obvisouly if you get the new phone you will just have to extend the contract with O2. I sure hope that the rumor that O2 and Apple iwll be selling the phone for £100 because it hurt my pride and wallet when i spent £270 last time. Well down the road in Gloucester, lol its not that bad but I'm sure there a phone tower on Chosen Hill and on the hills surrounding. BTW where about do you live in Cheltenham?
Yeah, I rebooted my phone and connectivity came back. There is precedent in all this - the sudden apperance of EDGE in previously non EDGE areas a week or so before the Nov 9th launch. I'm guessing this is a similar occurance.
Your speculation that the iPhone is causing all this is flawed, I reckon o2 are just upgrading the network as pointed out previously. Also handsets do lose connectivity at times and a reset is required to get you connected again... typical scenario at work... Also I reckon that as the handset was purchased separately for the iPhone contracts as long as you fork out again for the new one you'll be OK. Remember you are not restricted to the handset you get with your contract in fact at any time you can go purchase another and put your SIM in that... Its just that with the data intensive iPhone they set up 'special tariffs' for it. ps this is a guess on my part and I've actually heard nothing about the new iPhone from o2.
new iphone launch? HAHAHAHAHA madness ensues. i love the loonies we get into the shop "i hear it's going to be an iphone nano, is it true?!" - yes mate, that and it hovers... no new information, it's not been launched yet, we know nothing, it's not in stores on the 9th... the conference is on the 9th... get out
COME OOOOONNN HOVERPHONE! Personally I think it's going to be 3G, and have shiny buttons, and lights, and it'll have attitude sensors for motion detection, and it'll be able to see you and tell you how nice you look, and have a solid state 500gb hdd, and a 5mp camera, and come with a free car! Or at least, so all the crazy insane rumours going around at work and in forums have lead me to believe!
no but really i've been in o2 for a week and a bit now, i've seen at least 6 people demand for information about the new iphone and i mean demand. There's one guy who comes in daily asking if we're having a midnight opening on the 9th.
Hmm... I might go to a midnight opening and flog my old phone (Jailbroken so that it looks new and fancy!) claiming that it's the new one and then disappear into the night like a fanboy destroying guy on a bike! Mwahahahah!
Just because the stores aren't open doesn't mean the fanboys wont be floating around... With just their heads visible on top of their black turtle-neck + jeans combo BOOM! BOOM? BOOM BOOM! BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! Like chickens.
MacWorld UK are claiming to have insider knowledge on pricing and upgrades: http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipod-itunes/news/index.cfm?newsid=21562 And if you go to the O2 iPhone website, it's currently saying that the iPhone is out of stock. Care to confirm or deny, Fev?
exciting... deny can't see why they would lower the price of the new one when they just up'd the price of the old one. current iPhone stock in UK: 168 new and 8gig is back up to £269... big staff meeting tomorrow although it's to "welcome you new guys" so we'll see what occurs.
