From the notes on Engadget, I believe it was said to run OS X.

I'll be picking one up as soon as they hit shelves. Been looking to buy a phone for a while and finally think one has come out to actually be usefull than JUST a phone. The term (and all the product thus named) "SmartPhone" are just plain crap IMO.

ah good falls in line with the end of my contract, end of 07 over here. I never considered an ipod till now and i'll have to see what SE are offering. I'm sure it's gonna have some tuff competition. Nokia and SE won't go down without a fight.

Grah, more iCrap, nobody wants/needs this thing, after all we just got our 'Chocolate' right? The cell phone market is over rated, I'm glad mine's dead, soon as I go to get another though I'll be flooded with buying the iPhone, the NV, the Chocolate, the RAZR/KRZR, the random other tiny phone, and get it for 49.99 after mail in rebate, but get a contract for 2 years that's $300 to break, thing is by then my phone will be out of date! Just make a phone for once! One that isn't junked up with music, movies, 'txt' messages and cameras.

Funny thing is, they still dont own the rights to the iPhone trademark. They are currently negotiating with Cisco for them.

They also are now Apple Incorporated instead of Apple Computers Incorporated. Again they do not own the rights to Apple Incorporated.

My understanding is that they've been in negotiations with Cisco (and Linksys) for a while, and finalized things today. Err... yesterday, seeing that it's now 7am (time for bed soon I think).

Anyways, I certainly hope to get one. Looks amazing, and as far as I'm concerned, proper syncing alone is worth most of that price.

    In a word: :jawdrop:

Typically, Apple again got it spot on. If you are going to build a mobile with integrated features, make it a truly integrated device, not a mobile with some features bolted on (not quite one thing or another), an awkwardly integrated Windows Mobile PDA (not quite all working together smoothly) or a Sony Mylo (not quite a complete mobile device).

The only small disappointment is the lack of handwriting recognition. This could have been the new Newton... but damn, it is polished.

Try a Motorola Razr (the original)? Slim, lightweight, elegantly designed and well constructed, good battery life, good phone and only a phone. I've had mine for over two years and still don't feel the need to upgrade.

I was thinking about how high the price is and then was looking at it. 600$ for the 8gb, bbc news equated this to about £350 using "uk tax" increase over the normal price. so £350 with a 2 year contract thats only £15 a month including a 2 year contract? Thats not all that expensive? or am i missing something

The way I see it, is a 8GB ipod nano is 249, so 600 minus the cost of the 8gb ipod which it pretty much is 360, which is definitely not an outrageous price for the smartphones that are out today, so it isnt a bad price when you think of it like that.

I love the design of it, and I would love to have one. I am curious to know what it is going to be like to type on with the on screen qwerty keyboard. Since its just a touch screen it may be dificult to use, but i trust apple to make something that works well.

The people that say "i dont need a phone with all this blah blah blah" dont have a reason to be in this thread. Some people do feel the need to have a phone with more features than just to call people, and that is the market for this, its not there to replace you're razr or old school nokia. It is there however to replace any WM5 crap out there (i have the moto q, and although it is a nice phone, it is plagued by the same things windows is plagued by, and yes i did switch to mac and have never looked back since.

I've seen/used plenty, it's okay, and better than most, but still just an overpriced thing used for talking to people. The whole cell phone marker pisses me off. It's become some twisted hierarchy of "My phone is better and has free calling past 7pm". And $500 for one of these?! I'd rather spend that on something that can get good power out of that money. 8800GTS and a new CPU cooler anyone?

*edit, yes I am not a fan of any cell phone, I have no need for one and think only 20% of the people who own one have a need for theirs either.

And quite possibly the worst UI in the world. If I could have had my RAZR but with a Sony Ericson UI, that would have been a keeper.

As it is, I'll stick with my frankenphone (K750i with W800 firmware) until October, wherepon it'll get pushed aside for my new iPhone (Oh yes, it will be mine...), or whatever it's called then.

GOO I agree the moto's have terrible UI, I can stand them. They are style over substance everyone of them.

The iPhone looks like it will do both very well! If the price is right I would certainly consider one.

It certainly looks very, very good. But doesn't anyone think 8gb is way too little memory? It's a mp3 player, camera/video phone, organiser, etc. so how does one store all these files on it? Does it have a memory card slot on it at all?

Some odd news, it looks like Apple and Cisco both own the iPhone trademark:

    From The Guardian newspaper
The Guardian: AAPL Will Keep Name
By Charles Arthur / Apple 09:47pm

The more we look into this, the more it becomes (as Malcolm Gladwell points out in an excellent New Yorker article) like a mystery, not a puzzle - that is, the answers were all out there already, but needed to be put together. (Gladwell's piece is about Enron. Highly recommended.)

Apple did indeed register the "iPhone" trademark in the US, and it was granted in September 2006. Don't believe us? See this page. Sure, it's down for "Ocean Telecom Services", but the description (not to mention the typography) are all that Apple gear. And as 10layers noted in October, Apple had been filing with the same description all over the world, including the UK.

Now, if you look at the results of a search in the US Patent and Trademark Office for "iPhone", you get 9 results, of which 6 have been abandoned. The only others, besides Apple, are for a hotel internal phone, and Cisco's, which arguably doesn't conflict with the Apple one - the trademark is in a different field, of "computer hardware and software for providing integrated telephone communication with computerized global information networks", not "handheld and mobile digital electronic devices for the sending and receiving of telephone calls, faxes, electronic mail, and other digital data..."
