In the same vein, I'd estimate that 0% of the people who own an 8800GTS actually *needs* it. While I could live without my phone, it's damn useful to have around.

So why are you posting in this thread? ;) It being about a cell phone and all.

As for the name: Apple could plump for: "iCom". Close to "icon" which is what the iPod has become anyway, it could stand for: "information and COmmunication Manager".

iPhone? Looks remarkably like the LG KE850 (albeit, a bit chunkier).

I won't be buying one, I've got no need for it (have owned x2 Windows Mobile devices in the past, but never really used them to their full extent). My K800 plays MP3's just fine, and unlike PDA-type devices, it's nice an small/pocketable.

    I'll be getting it.
I've been waiting (said in a scary quite voice).

I've been plied with blackberry's, trio's and all sort of internet ready phones...all have been well things that have other things added to them, sort of. Afterthoughts all.

I live now with a base LG, no iPod, no PDA...nothing else. I have no need for a stand alone anything (well except for the phone of course). What I want is a totally intergrated device that is at first (for me) a phone and then an MP3 player, web surfer, calender, movie/tv show player and email client. All of which I have ocassional need for and all of which would be useful to have.

Bonus of course is the Apple came out with one, it will be using an operating system I'm happy with. It looks fantastic.

    <scary quite voice> I've been waiting </scary quite voice>

One thing ive notices is that it dosent support 3G.
And from reading arround the subject on The Inq* and The Reg* it seems that because of the lack of 3G Europe mobile phone suppliers (vodaphone, T-mobile and the like) wont touch it as they've spend oodles of money on 3G networks and they need a device to run on it so they can make their money back.

Also, anyone notice the lack of FCC approval. Thats America out of the question for the time being. however im sure thatll get sorted soon and the 3G bit will be added at a later stage.
Nice looking phone tho, very sexy and sleek. shame its apple as itll cost the earth to own.

Jesus go and freaking READ UP.

Steve Jobs himself said US launch in June, specifically becuase it needs FCC approval which takes 2 months. It isn't 3G as the american market is so far behind the European/Asia markets, this being GSM is almost a step for them :hehe:. Still, Europe wont get it until near Christmas....

I'll likely get one, though its a shame it probably won't support my work email system (stupid lotus/domino)

I'd put money on Apple releasing a phoneless version (perhaps substituting a large hard drive instead of flash memory) alongside this as the 6G iPod.

Of course, I *do* have money on Bush taking an "emergency third term", so I might not be the best source here. But I'm more confident in the former (and truly hope I lose the bet for the latter).

ugh... all those uber new usability solutions have already been there on symbian phones... the more i investigate iphone the less revolutionary it seems (apart from cool touch controls)

For once I have to say yes it looks quite good.

BUT, EVERYONE is going to have an APPLE computer, APPLE iPod, APPLE iPhone.

What next? I just can't stand the fact that 3/4 of the people in my school all had one iPod.

Ah the Apple hype machine is in full effect...

UI aside, there's nothing there that makes me want one. I must be one of the rare people who craves someone to just make a really good phone with nothing else included. The best, more reliable phones I had were pre-camera and mp3 addons and this one just looks like a total beast to me.

Certainly it's the first Apple product in a while that I am totally apathetic towards.

already got people coming into the shop about it, can safely say it's gonna be £199 for the handset at least on an 18 month contract of £35 a month..

but then there's no 3g and support for faster euro networks...

    silly apple
