With O2 they are not allowing anyone out of contract early so you either have to see out the 18 months, buy the phone retail or buy your way out of the remaining contract.

Did you get that from the horses mouth? Because I'm not asking them to end my contract early, just give me an upgrade to a new handset (technically). If I have to pay for the handset, it's no biggie, but I should at least get something as a result of being an iPhone customer for the past 2 years (or however long it has been since launch - Nov 2007 IIRC?).

I reckon with some arm twisting on the phone I can get it as an upgrade in about a months time tbh. I know a sales rep at o2 very well from my job selling phones and contracts. Jo will be getting a call sometime very soon ;)

    Crazy person says what?

I'm pretty sure that the iPhone is not only the most advanced (bar possibly some of the HTC range) mobile phone on the market but it's also the easiest touch screen device in the world to use. What could you possibly think is so time consuming or frustrating to do on it? Every time I take my phone out of my pocket to do something it's a joy to do so because the software is so sleek and well designed.

I'm totally confused by your "rant" tbh... I think you might be a troll -.-

I was a bit gutted when i found out about the lack of upgrade options for existing iphone customers on o2. Then i thought about it for a bit, at the end of the day the iphone is just another handset. Its a bit much to ask for existing iphone customers to upgrade on the cheap when there are thousands of other customers with different handsets that dont get that privilege. Im not saying i'd turn it down, but it makes sense from a business point of view imo.

With the upgrade thing I got it from their forums and twitter feeds, give them a buzz anyway though to be on the safe side as if you are on their "priority" list (http://www.o2blueroom.co.uk/O2PriorityList/) with Silver or better (regularly £35+ / month on a bill) then you may be able to get an upgrade early. But as you say, you've been with them some time, they may help you out anyway.

At worst if you phone them they can say no.

It made sense with the first iPhone, where the customers bought the phone outright and simply paid for line rental. With the 3G, however, the handset is heavily subsidised and O2 has to recoup that over the length of the contract. Sadly (though quite fairly) that means no upgrade for 3G users :(

anyone put their phone next to the speaker?

my iPhone 2G has been making the speaker buzz whenever it's awake (screen light up). it shouldn't do that continuously as it is connected through Wi-fi, and edge is disabled using a jailbreak hack.

found out why: clear the fake stuff entered in cellular data network, although this will get me an IP on edge, but as long as i have it disabled via sbsettings, the phone will think there's no internet connection.

Also i have just found that my MMS messages dont seem to be working! Can anyone else confirm this on their iphones right now for me to confirm im not totally paranoid?

    Thanks!

    All Fine here

I did have a blip at lunchtime where all I could get was GPRS rather than 3G, and the 3G reception at work is normally excellent (5 bars). Only lasted 10 mins, and then it was back to normal.

I put it down to random fluctuations in the spacetime continuum ;)

    Yup, me too.
I fixed it by removing the profile I downloaded from that benm site. O2 must have found a way to block anyone using it.

To remove it, go to settings > general ? profiles.

Complete pain really, it breaks tethering. The week I'm in Wales, they decide to sort it. It's a great place for mtbing, and it looks nice when it's not raining, but it ain't half booring otherwise.

Btw, thanks for confirming it wasn't just me :)

Tethering working again? or is it completely down after o2 fiddling with their system?

Anyone know the situation or whether we can install the profile on again or not?

Yeah I got that my my phone is all default settings (so no net settings had been changed).

Got fed up after a while and called o2 up about it and it was a known problem and they were 'fixing it as a priority'. IIRC, their excuse was something about excessive demand - don't really get that myself though as there was nothing special going on that day that meant more iPhone users would be on the net than any other day! Excuses, excuses!

Let's hope it doesn't happen again!!

FYI: the next firmware update bricks tethering by breaking the ability to use 3rd party profiles... at least in the beta..
