My past 2 iPods have broken within days after the year-long complimentary warranty. One was a 4G and the other a 5G video. So now, I have this 5G out of warranty with a bad headphone jack I fixed a few weeks ago. Fortunately for me, through a bank-switch offer, I got a new 30GB. Should I get Applecare? Is it worth it? How many of you who have it actually used it after a year?
I didn't get it. 5th gen still working fine, coming up to 2 years this October. You must be a bit unlucky with yours.
I've never needed it for any of my iPods, but my MBP will be headed in for service for the third or fourth time (in just over a year) shortly. If you're willing to try sorting out any problems yourself I'd say don't bother, but there's only so much you can do for spontaneous combustion or something like that. Translation: personally, I wouldn't bother, but iPods seem to know if they're under warranty and break accordingly; it may be worthwhile for you especially as you've had a bad run.
My new rule is that the HD based iPods get applecare and the flash based do not. I've lost 2 hard drive based iPods over the last several years. I don't know where it falls into my rule - but I intend to get applecare for my iPhone also, but I haven't yet. With the hard drive based ones, several small drops can leave the outside undamaged but make the player just as unusable as 1 big drop. Oh - and go for the student price when you buy the applecare - The last time I did it, the guy in the store basically asked me if I knew anyone at all who was going to school before ringing it up at the student price.
