Not surprised it kept going though really. Looking at the nano sitting on my desk ;) the plastic is surprisingly thick.

You just had to casually throw that in, didn't you? :p

Yeah, I'm not sure what all those people are worrying about when they say it looks so thin it might snap. I handled one at the Apple store and it is quite sturdy. You cannot warp the case at all, and it doesn't squeak or creak.

On the black unit scratches are easily visible, so you want to be careful with it in that respect, but it definitely can withstand normal daily wear and tear.

The earphone plug fits in snugly and is unlikely to pop out. The controls are nicely positioned, right under the thumb. The "hold" switch is a bit fiddly, but that's the only criticism really. The screen is transreflective, so clearly visible even in bright sunlight. It doesn't really need the backlight --which is nice.

The whole thing is what I think a good MP3 player should be about. Sturdy, no-frills clear display and intuitive non-fiddly controls, of a size and shape that you can pop it in your shirt/jacket pocket and not worry about it. Good sound quality, good battery life, reasonable price. The fact that you can simply use it with Winamp and forget about iTunes makes it an irrisistible choice. I really cannot see how this unit can be improved upon.

I too think that the hold button could have been a bit better - rather than it protruding they could have leveled it with the metal case and put some ridges on it - that'd look better maybe.

Which is exactly why I went for the white model. It doesn't look as good as the black I admit, but as you say - scratches will be waaaaaay more visible on black and I'm not a believer in buying a small ipod/phone/whatever and then doubling its volume in your pocket by putting it in a cover. Plus fingerprints show up way more on shiny black.

The engraving on the back isn't as good as the ipod/ipod mini either but I think that's something to do with the thickness of the metal case.

Edit: it also comes with an ipod dock adapter too which is nice.

OK, one small improvement. Instead of polycarbonate they could have used a sapphire glass front cover. My two Junghans watches (casually throwing that in :p ) have sapphire glass covers and that stuff is unscratchable and darn near indestructible. Might have been worth a small increase in price.

Ouch thats gotta hurt. The nano is the only Ipod i have interest in as it is very small for the amount of storage. I will wait and see what nano clones come out before i make a purchase

That held up to a surprisingly large amount of abuse. Now we need a comparison review where they do the same thing to a full-sized iPod as well as a mini :naughty:

sapphire crystal glass would prob add too much to the cost to make it worth the usp (unique selling point)
