Hi, I have a 30GB MK3008GAL HD that came out of a broken ipod video. after l did some looking up on the net and found this info on it http://www3.toshiba.co.jp/storage/english/spec/hdd/mk3008.htm this says that it has a ata connector like previous ipods on it. the only difference is that instead of using the CF/Microdrive interface it uses something diffrent. it has approximately 43 pins on it (i think its 43, i cant see that small very easaly). so, how do i get the pinout for this? i want to make an adapter that will go to IDE so i can put it in my laptop (im getting tired of my laptop's 4GB HD. once i can find the pinout i already know how to do the rest. so, any help? Thanks!
I've already heard about a gux who hooked up his iPOD HDD to a PC IDE, so it's possible. Just one thing, the iPOD HDD seems to have some unknown File System on it (according to the guy who did this mod, but then again he used Windows, nobody expects windows to know any FS despite FAT and NTFS). But you shouldn't care, as you need to reformat the disk to use it in your laptop anyway.
so where is this guy? does he have a site, or any info on how to do it? and by default a win formated ipod hd is fat32. but you can formate it to anything u want.
heres his thread http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=120964&highlight=ipod+hard+drive you could also buy an external case, I got mine for $12 including shipping on ebay
yha, i already know about that. thouse ipod hd's use the standers cf/microdrive interface. ipod gens 1-4 and the photo use that. ipod videos use a different interface. i know it is ata/ide but i need a pinout to know what pin is what.
Might be difficult. I know that one reason, at least, IIRC, that they switched to this non-standard interface, is because when the iPod Mini first came out, the Mini was cheaper to buy than buying a 4GB CF Type II card. So there were people out there buying Mini's, and trashing them, just to get the drive out of them...not sure why Apple cared, as long as they sold them...it's just what I heard.
http://www.stec-inc.com/products/ideflashdrive/MACH1-1-8-PATA-SSD-Product-Manual_Rev_1.pdf Check out page 16. http://www.hardwarebook.info/ATA_ZIF Not as complete, but easier to read. I'd like to have one more source on the pinout just to be absolutely sure, but I haven't stumbled across the info on Toshiba's site yet. If making your own adapter seems a bit daunting, here is some info on ready made adapters. http://www.command-tab.com/2006/11/20/ipod-5g-hard-drives/ http://www.span.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=8932&rr=1 I've also seen some on ebay, so you may be able to do better there.
