Been trying to decide whether a 6800 ultra or 7800 GT would be a better investment for similar money, obviously the 7800 is a little spiffier but the ultra is still a solid performer right?

For the money I don't think theres enough in it to justify getting the 6800 Ultra over the 7800GT.
The 7800GT is faster, and for a few quid its worth it :)

The 7800 GT will be almost 75% faster in some situations.

7800GT is definatly value for money, for something like 25% extra, you get 75% faster. Impressive I think.

well, a 430/1200 GTX is nearly twice as fast as the Ultra when you start messing with HDR and other intensive situations. The GT is a bit slower than the GTX, so I think it's reasonable to assume that it is 75% faster in some of the more extreme circumstances.

wow yeah that is quite a hop in performance, looks like the decision is really a no-brainer. Why are the ultra's still retailing or going on ebay for so damn much money if they are so much slower and not made anymore?

i believe they are still made... on the nvidia website that they will stop production by the end of 2005.. and they go for so much because they are still a good card.. ok the 7800 gt is very good value but i would think a lot of people don't relise that it (the 7800gt) is actually better.. so they are still willing to buy them... + if someone once bought one for £350-400 then to see one on ebay for <£200 is too tempting for someone to be able to create a sli setup

Sorry but can I steal the thread for a sec. Is it worth it to buy another 6800GT and use SLi or should I sell the card and get a newer 7 series card ??

I would think getting another 6800GT would be better but getting a 7 series card would be more future proof as then yuo could get another one later and put that in SLI.

There's a reason Ultra's have all but evaporated from Newegg (and I'd imagine other e-tailers), but I still can't figure out why some 6800GTs are selling for $350+ when I can pick up a 7800GT for $290 or so and get about twice the performance with lower power consumption, a dual-link DVI port (I think... unless that's gtx only, and it's not as if I'm running a 30" LCD anyways), component-out standard and other goodies.

So, to answer the original question, no.

where are you getting a 7800gt for 290 may I ask? Sounds a bit interesting since I see them sell on forums for that price.
