I was wondering if i can cut the power cord from my computer speakers and use a 12v battery to power them would it work???
No way to tell without some description of the speakers. All spearkes are differnt so this wont work for all of them.
thats the speakr and that is the power cord, can i cut that and connect to a 12v battery? its um my sony vaio speakers on the back of the speaker it says DC IN is 12v and i think the speakers are 3watts
They should be alright, just dont get the polarity mixed up. What are you needing to run these off a battery for?
whats polarity? oh im making a portable sub/speaker system putting 2 6x9's and 1 10" sub so u think it would work? and do u know whats that cylinder lookingg thing near the end of the plug for?
polarity is the + and - parts of the wire, if you mess it up it wont work (and you can damage your speakers. no chance youll run that many subs off a batery unless you use car batteries any for the last one
my suggestion to you (since you mentioned a laptop i assume you want this thing portable) forget about the subs entirely, if you want good sound go pick up a decent pair of headphones. not the two speakers in the picture, you need to fine wich side of the power wire is + and which is - (for example the wire attached to the innermost part of the power cord is + on your speakers) then go to radioshack and buy a bag of 9V battery clips. solder a 9V clip onto the end of your speakers (observing polarity) you should be able to power those speakers off a 9V battery, ive done so before with simmilar speakers come back and ask anymore wuestions that you might have
whaaaaaaaat!!! you should be good doing it with a 12v. If you live near a frys or similar electronics store, they have a good selection of various size 12v rechargable batteries. I have a 10" sub in my room which I was going to use in my next project, but they're not exactly portable, but not a bad idea either. I think a better description for you would just be remote powered. My prediction however would be that the sub would greatly overpower the speaker. Also, you might want to check the batteries for those plastic jeep go karts that they make for little kids in toys r us. I believe those are 12v, and medium sized. You could probably run a system for a few hours off of one of those, but it really depends on how many watts you're planning on using up. As for the 9v batteries... its an ok idea, but they won't last that long at all I've made smaller portable systems in the past, maby you can get some ideas from my projects. I will be building a much larger system within the next month or so.
Have you thought about current draw at all.... ? To power an amp with a sub attached to it (subs are quite big....)... maybe you should try testing it while in operation before you go and buy a battery... You need to put an ammeter in series with the power supply... and read off how many amps while the speaker is running at full blast. Alternativley, look on the power supply and look for the highest current rating.
