Don't ask me why about the marathon man quote but hey...

anyhow I don't know wheather this should be in GD or Electronics so a mod could move it as appropriate ...

I currently have not too much stuff going on in my room but it's due to change...

I only have 2 wall sockets(double) and I was wandering how much stuff is safe to be running from it... I think the max ampage for each socket is 13A or something but unsure...

Could someone also tell me what normal ampages for certain things are so I can calculate how many things I can use at a time...

    Now:

    19" Monitor
    300W PSU
    14" Portable TV
    VCR
    PS2
Stereo (just a cheapish normal one aiwa)
    Amp (15W)
    Fan

    In Future:

    2x 19" or 21" monitor
    400W~ PSU x2
    52" RPTV
    DVD
    Sky Box
    AV Amp/recievcer
    PS2
Amp (100w - not always needed on)
    CD deck
    DAB reciever
    Analogue Radio Reciever
    Minidisk recorder
    VCR
    Fridge
    Microwave (not always needed)
    Various clocks
    Varous lamps.. mostly fluresant (sp?)

    Thanks for help

just see how much you can stack on, if it doesnt blow the circuit, it's fine, if it does, no harm done.

If I remember my physics gsce. P=IV so if you know the power ratings then you can work out the individual currents.

    so

    Current = Wattage/Voltage ( Current = W/240 )

so the 300W psu is 1.25A ( Does that sound right?)

I think you'll be fine so long as your not running Kettles and Vacuum cleaners!

[edit] Just noticed the fridge and microwave. These are more likely to cause problems. The rest would probably be ok if balanced across the 2 sockets.

or tin foil if nails are too expensive... (believe me, seen it done!)

When I were in uni I had.... ummmm... 24 plugs coming off one socket... (they give you one socket in the room and tell you NOT to use multigangs... ummm ok... I'll do meh essay on the computer with no screen, and then I'll un-plug the computer and connect the screen in so I can check it... duuhh) and I had no problem, in fact the warden reported that in our semester, the hall had registered it's highest power use in 10 years.... hmm I wonder who that was??? :D

Each 13A socket will handle 3100 watts, so add the labels up.

However, the socket ring main fuse will be 20A, 4700 watts, which covers all the sockets on that ring, usually all the sockets on one floor of the house.

a moderately safe way of going at this is to follow electrical code... a line comming from the fise/breaker box can have up to 8 outlet connected to it... it the 4 outlets (2 doubles) are both on the same panel line (they probably are) you can put just about anything in terms of household appliances with the outlets

the only time power consumption becomes a real problem is witn the use of power tools or industrial appliances (some can easily take 10-15A each)

as lond as you only have abou 6-7 things on at any one time you should be fine (clocks, desklamps, rechanging for portables... etc. don't really need to be included in that count as they draw little power)
