Now, the Premium mobo has a passive heatsink for the chipset rather than the whiney fan...but I'm going to assume it's going to get way too hot anyways (correct me if I'm wrong), so I was thinking about adding the chipset block. Would the DD-D5 12V pump Here be a good one, or is there a better one out there? (good flow rate + QUIET!)
The pump is all good, even the smaller one is powerful enough for a complete system. If you are still thinking about 1x 7900GT vs. 2x 7800GT then you should be interested in this one -> http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=3437 VR-Zone shows up, how to run a 7900GT@7900GTX without watercooling
Thanks ^^ I'm going to be using WC, so hopefully I'll achieve even better Question though...I've got 100gb SATA hd (7200) and one 200GB IDE hd (7200), should I use either, or, or could I put both in without making the inside too messy with IDE and Sata strips? Edit: I'm pretty noob at overclocking...so does anyone have any good links I can go to to read up on? Especiially if relevant to the parts I'm buying...
Well, the things won't be so much messed up with those two drives. Think about a rounded IDE-cable and sleeved power-cables and just route all cables with some clamps/strips out of the way. There is so much information about OC in the WWW, that you'll find anything you wan't using g00gle. Just look out for the hardware you wan't to buy with the word "review" added to the search In general you can say, that DFI-motherboards are very good for overclocking. Then add some high-class RAM from e.g. Corsair or Kingston and at least a XFX- or EVGA-7900GT.
Offtopic I've got another computer with 2 harddrives, and the one with windows installed on it is broken, and I can't boot it properly....my question is, if I take an old 20gb HD, stick it in my computer I'm on nw, and do a clean windows install + updates, could I take it to the one with the faulty HD and just replace it and have the computer continue to work? Or would installing windows on a computer with certain hardware effect it when I change it over? /offtopic Edit: I can get a fairly good BFG 7900 GT, but no one around me sells the XFX or EVGA...
I think, the BFG 7900 GT would do Read more about here -> http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/bfg_geforce_7900_gtx_oc_7900_gt_oc_review/ About the HDD: You cannot install WinXP to the disk in one system and put it afterwards into another. Thats because of the hardware, that is checked when you install it. But you can simply put the 20Gig HDD into the desired system as "primary master" (IDE 0-0) and just boot from CD to install WinXP on it.
Ahh damn, I knew I could do that, but I was hoping for a shortcut Thanks for that article, anything else you got in your things? I googled some interesting ones, was wondering about if you had any nice ones? Overall though, you think the system is worth it? Edit: And since I'm using WC, even with the pre-oc'd I'll bump it up a little.
If you are an ethusiast looking for the newest games to play, than it's worth it. If I had the money right now, I probably would buy this one: CPU: Socket 939 Athlon 64 3700+ (Toledo) ~200$ (DualCore by now is not interesting for gaming and other software is still not optimized for it, so you can wait those 2 years. I would!) Mainboard: Socket 939 LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR ~180$ RAM: Kingston HyperX DIMM 2 GB Kit (DDR400, KHX3200AK2/2G) ~240$ GPU: BFG Tech Geforce 7900GT BFGR79256GTOCE Video Card - Retail ~ 330$ HDD1: Western Digital Raptor WD360GD (only for the OS and the software) ~100$ HDD2: something about 300GB ~100$ That would be all about ~1150$, so you can still afford some good WC-components and a new case, if planing with 1500$.
Well, I was figuring, if I'm going to be spending a lot of money anyways, I might as well buy something fast enough to plow through a few years...that's why I'm thinking dual core as well as more and more things are becoming useful for it...motherboard I just picked because I'm sick of buggy motherbords And btw, the one problem with some of those parts is that they're not mainstream, mainstream, and no where local to me will be selling them :/ Edit: Anyone know fro mfirst-hand expierience how the Premium board's passive chipset cooling works? Stays cool, or heats up too much?
When I buy these things...you're going to see lots of posts by me about overclocking...I'm a big noob I read and read and read, but still don't get many things :/ CPU is easy enough since you can use BIOS, same with GPU (or a similar program to use)...I'm just not very sure of a good way to test the stability, or how to OC memory and mb. Oh ya, and I'm still debating spending an extra $40 on the x16 mobo
You do this stepwise You clock a bit and then run prime95. If it runs stable you clock a bit more, and on, and, on, and on, until the system becomes unstable through prime95 is running. When you reached this point you make a step back, to where prime95 was running stable and you're done. To be absolutely sure, that nothing happens I would suggest that you take a stepping a little bit lower than the last stable settings For the GFX-card there is a very simple way to reach maximum OC. Here you can use a tool for, which is called ATiTool to be found f.e. here Another tool is PowerStrip, which do quiet the same thing and is also found at techpowerup.com. Prime95 can be found here BTW: A good forum for OC is found at http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/
And the ATItool works for a 7900GT?... I've used it for my...radeon 9800 and it worked nicely, I just thought the whole "atitool" meant for ati. Thanks for all your help btw, sorry to be a pain.
Of course the ATiTool does not work with the 7900GT therefore is PwerStrip. Don't know why I even mentioned the ATiTool
Sorry, one more thing (actually, three)..Firstly, will the standard maze4 GPU fit a 7900GT? And also, I've read about how when you take off the CPU cooler for water cooling, it messes up the surrounding componants cooling...Asus ships a small fan to cool them, but then I'm wondering, is the fan loud and annoying? And lastly, the passive heatpipe/heatsink that comes standard on the A8N-Premium board, is it any good, or should that get WCed as well? Ooops, one more...with the introduction of widespread DDR2 memory, and AMD's new socket schedualed for release this summer, do you think it'd be smarter to hold off on buying these parts until then (would things drop dramatically in price?) or will it be sorta like now where even with the release of a next-gen thing (like the fx-60) other things remain just as pricy..
First, I do not know anything about those maze4-coolers, because you cannot get those in Finland or Germany. Second, I would suggest that you get a GPU-cooler that cools also the RAM of the gfx-card, like the normal cooler does. DDR2 does not speedup the system that much, that it is necessary to jump on that train. If you OC your system anyway, than you can get the same results with DDR1. Maybe next year, when AMD has a big range in that market it gets better. Also I don't think, that the prices come down that much, when AM2 is launched, because at the same time AMD will lower/freeze the production of the socket 939-CPU's. There is an annoncement, that they will produce 939-chips at least till end of the year. At least the heatpipe-system of the A8N Premium-board works very effective, but if you go for real overclocking, it would be better to cool everything with water, because the northbridge and the mosfets will become very warm too.
Ya, the GPU cooler I'll get with ramsinks. Alright about the DDR2 Mmmkay, 939 it is. Alright, I might leave the heatpipe on..tentitavely.... MY one question unanswered though...the parts near the CPU that the fan usually cools will go uncooled, and Asus provides a small fan to cool them...you know if that fan is loud and annoying?
Sorry. About the ASUS-Fan I've got nothing to say, until I've never seen this board in action. But If it is annoyingly loud, you will be able to use another one for sure.
Arg...now I'm not sure if I should just wait for AM2...so that I can actually make upgrades...not sure though :/ Edit: After reading up about it...probably not, it doesn't seem that great atm
I'd say go for it... I'm off to uni THIS year, and still getting a desktop Soon... soon... *drools*...
