Im looking into upgrading my trusty 7800gt for an 8800 of some description - most probably a gts. Question is.... Is it worth splashing out on the 640mb version over the 320mb one??

It gives a performance boost, it depends if you are wanting really high res gaming or not.

Depends on your monitor resolution, if its 1280x0124 or less, then it probably isn't worth it. If it is a higher resolution you would see the performance increase.

1280x1024 is going to be pretty equal for each either GTS, future games might change that, but for now the 320 is the same and sometimes even faster at 1280x1024.

The 320MB card should allow you to enjoy some high levels of AA at 1280x1024 in current games.

    I say go with 640MB...
When I got my video card (Geforce FX 5900 when it was brand new) I got with 128MB instead of 256MB, soon after (less then a year) I regretted as, due to the lack of RAM, I wasn't able to set to the settings of a slightly newer games to max or near max. My brother got the same video card with 256MB of RAM, and it performed MUCH better, for a longer period of time.

I say, stay go with 640MB (I know I am) , as you will be able to keep up max and near max settings for a longer period of time.

I have a 17inch CRT, and play my games at 1600x1200 @ 85Hz. (now, since end of last year at 1024x768, with low-med settings, it's a Geforce 6600GT 256MB of RAM). As I don't want to take any changes, I'm going to get a Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB OC (it's just a couple of dollars more then the non-OC one).

you are trading in a 7800gt, so seems to me like you don't exactly update everytime something new comes out. the price difference to get the 640 (about $50) seems to me to be well worth the money. if you need every dollar you have, then i can see going for the 320. otherwise, the $50 is well spent.

The 8800GTS is about to drop in price.

I would scream at you if you were considering a 8600 as the 8800GTS 320Mb is the only choice for midrange gaming.

However the 8800GTS 320Mb will be a depressing purchase, i bought mine and it minces everything, but i know in 3 months it will be slow due to lack of memory.

Save a tad more up, wait and snap up a 8800GTS 640Mb as cheap as they come, there is no advantage in purchasing a expensive brand name as they all got the same coolers near enough and clock up the same.

the 8800GTS 320Mb will come down to the £130-150 mark soon, and im gonna go SLi ASAP! :D

out of curiosity, are you basing this on anything other than your own opinion?

    What is.....?

Your financial situation? You flush with cash? get the 640... things a little tight then get the 320. I picked up the budget EVGA 8800GTS 320. I play all games at 1600 x 1200 on a 19inch wide screen display. I turn on alkl the eye candy and this little card just rips through games. I will tell you however my 6600 Conroe is running daily at 425fsb for a speed of 3825 with my memory running 1:1 with the timings set sat 4-4-4-4. This speed pushes this card like crazy at stock. But I don't game at stock!! I game at 660/1000. I did the pencil mod on the memory so I could get some good speed out of it.
There is many 8800GTX owner out there wondering how it is that this little card blew them off the road in the benches. It really does fly. here are the links to the scoresin my sig

I still say if you can afford more then get it!! If not, it isn't like you are getting stuck with a dawg! I plan to add another gts 320 and run it in sli on one system and stuff a GTX in my other but, that is going to take time to scrape that together. In the meantime it is all good here.

Yes chaps it is my own opinion, but you must agree that the 8800GTS 320 and 640 will drop in price soonish.

I have seen them selling at £140 plus vat i believe it was, there was a thread in the FS thread relating to it.

May i mention, isn't everything opinion based in these forums......

    Smiles all around...

not really, and there is also a difference between stating your opinion, and presenting that opinion as fact.

    for example:

"I believe there is evidence of WMDs in Iraq."

    "THERE ARE WMDS IN IRAQ."

Look he could also wait 2 more years to pick one up and then I assure you it would be cheaper even still. I reccommend to everyone....If you really want a piece of hardware buy it!! Don't make some lame ass what do you think post. Lord these get old.

Hardware can be a pretty expensive investment, and you want to be sure to get what is best for your money. If your not sure if its worth the extra cash for a version with more memory it's better to ask then to just go ahead and buy but regret it later.

you know what gets even more annoying? guys that come in and post how annoying or "old" "what should i buy" threads are, when they could just not look in the thread in the first place...not to mention that one of the main purposes of this forum is to help people with questions like these.

Now back to the topic ^^ After posting here and considering the opinions here, I got myself an 8800 GTS 320 GS from Gainward... I like it, FSX for example runs fine on 1280x1024 and near max settings... so if you're no hardcore gamer I'd say you're good with the 320...

But haveing read this thread brings up another question... for SLI, do the cards have to be exactly the same, or could one be a 320MB and the other a 640MB version?

    Cheers

    Fred

They will work in SLi however the 640Mb GTS will only use 320Mb of memory so it'd be exactly like having to 320Mb GTS's in SLi.
You wont get the combined 960Mb but rather 640Mb overall
