Actually, it's because even further back in history, "creatives" used the Amiga for graphics, and Atari for music.. both used Motorola CPUs. When Both Amiga, and Atari went belly up, them jumped to Apple because they used the same CPUs... it was just a natural progression for them. Also.. at the time, ALL PCs were dreadful, whereas the Apple wasn't.

Your part correct, then I suppose :)

Indeed, I did read the thread, and I felt it important to stick up for yslen in the face of the "linux at any cost" argument laid at his feet :)

I rent a dedicated server, a Xeon 3xxx chip (dual core 2.13ghz) with 6gb ram.

This then runs VMware ESXi 4.0, and then runs several FreeBSD 8.2 guests, currently 5, and one Debian guest.

They are all servers for webservices - under FreeBSD, I have an internal SQL, an internal backup, a webhosting box, then debian is running Zimbra community edition for mail.

While we're talking servers, not desktop, the BSD boxes are booted in under 30 seconds. Love it.

    Anytime :thumb:

My day job is a network consultant, so I'm more than aware that not everything is perfect in every situation, no matter how horrible a product is at one task, if its good at another which its required for then that's all that matters to the person using it, or in my case, the company buying it!

As promised, now I'm back home, I'll update you all on my experiences with a newer version of Ubuntu - if anyone is still interested!!

I'm pleased to announce that Ubuntu 10.04 is now the only OS running on my laptop. With my desktop running 7 (handling the photo-editing, ipod-syncing and gaming that Linux isn't great at - see my earlier posts) I have no need for windows on my laptop any more.

    - 10.04 is REALLY REALLY FAST. It boots in about 35 seconds on my old (Sempron 1.6Ghz, 2gb 533mhz RAM) laptop, and shuts down in 5-6 seconds. Windows XP, by comparison, took nearly 2 minutes to boot and almost a minute to shut down.
    - It works out of the box. Everything from the webcam to the wireless; everything just works. I spent weeks under 8.10 trying to get the webcam to work, and had no joy. With 10.04 it worked out of the box. I'd say that's a good sign!
    - Most of the Video issues I had before have gone. The open source ATI drivers have improved immeasurably since 8.10, and can easily handle full screen non-HD video, flash or otherwise. Not yet found HD content to try out, because my internet connection sucks.
    - It looks really cool :D Aside from the default theme having the minimise/maximise/close buttons on the wrong side, the new interface is great. Compiz is installed by default and is much smoother on this hardware than it used to be. I get at least 40fps when messing about with fancy reflected cubes and what have you.

All in all, it's great. It's a real shame Adobe and Apple don't make their software for Linux. It's a smaller shame (because it's not easily possible) that games don't work either. Given the reports of TF2 getting <30fps on a macbook pro, I'm not holding my breath for steam games on linux with the hardware I'm running.

Running Debian Lenny on my Laptop and compared to XP it flies, graphics are the main problem as it uses the Unichrome Pro (totally useless), can't run any of the newer distros as Ubuntu and Fedora fail to get to the desktop.

Getting my Mobile broadband working with Ubuntu (Desktop) was easy compared to the workarounds I had to use in Debian.
