    Hi

On my main rig, I'm getting red dots on my screen, similar to dead pixels. But last time I checked you couldn't take screenshots that include the dead pixels, so does this mean my graphics card is slowly dying? The card is a 7800gtx, and from my knowledge it was bought shortly after release, so it's getting on a bit...

    Any ideas?

hmm. It's either the monitor, the connection to/from the monitor, or the card itself. Did you try reseating it on the mobo? And what kind of monitor is it? TFT, CRT?

TFT. Conected it to my laptop via the same cable, and the picture is fine. And no, not reseated it yet, only just noticed. As I said though, it seems pretty weird being able to take a screenshot of it.

Edit: Just been running the ATi artifact scanner, in the ATi tool (on an nVidia card), and it's constantly beeping to indicate errors. And the temperature is happily going through the roof. Think we might have found the problem.

Yup, was gonna say if your temps are high, could be artifacts! Hope you get it sorted. GL!

EDIT: Just to tell you, I took off the stock coolers off my set of 7800GT's and replaced them with Arctic Cooling Accelero X1's. Excellent, and cheap as hell right now too. But it helps just to remove/replace the thermal chewing gum crap that the manufacturers like to use on the stock cooling solutions with real TIM. Works wonders for temps!

I have seen this before on another machine with a similar card. You could drag the boxes and they would have red lines follow them. You could even screenshot it. The way it was resolved was to download the latest driver. I would also suggest updating the machines bios if this doesn'twork.

Yep that's exactly the problem And on a cold boot occasionally you get lines all over the screen, but after resetting it is seems fine. Already got the latest driver (bar any beta drivers), so I guess I need to find a BIOS for my card. Think the motherboard is already running the latest...

As for dust there is a little bit in there, but after cleaning it out it's still doing it :wallbash:

Sounds to me like bad drivers. Try reinstalling them.

I didn't quite get if it's a laptop or desktop, but if it's a desktop, try reseating the card. And be sure to clear out any dust.

Tryed reseating it and clearing out the dust, and I think it's the card, not drivers, as when it crashes on a cold boot, it doesn't get past BIOS usually, and when it does, the lines on the screen start before Windos starts up.

*sigh* I guess I best look for a new card soon.

oh! I forgot. Run a memory test.

I doubt that it's it, but it's worth a shot. Memory errors tend to do strange things sometimes.

Graphics card is fried. Simple as that.

Wont be drivers if its happening at the bios display.

Wont be heat related if its happening from a cold start.

    My X800 went this way.
