My mouse occasionaly starts moving to the left of the screen. Its a genius optical mouse, ive cleaned under neath, and reinstalled windows, any other ideas. It doesnt have a bug in the cavity, (thats happened to me, and your mouse becomes verry erativ when it does.

Is it cordless? This is generally a sign of low battery...if it's wired check there's power going to it all the time and no loose wires

I've seen the effect on mine on odd occasions, as bigal said, very smooth movement. But here in the northern hemisphere near 0 degrees longitude mine moves to the right, so it's obviously tied to coriolis forces, or in bigal's case, the moon. :geek:

Or maybe a bit of muck & leakage starting one of the counters clocking up or down on its own?

I'm also in England, near 0 degrees, and my optical mouse (a small belkin one) occasionally wandered smoothly to the top left hand corner of my screen. I found that it did it less often when I changed the mouspad to one with a matt finish, but it still happened occasionally. I too thought of all sorts of possble causes, (eg. strange reflections off the mousemat, leaky / faulty components in the mouse, etc) but it turned out that the simplest answer was the right one:

Although I had cleaned the lens on the bottom of tme mouse, properly, some specs of dust had somehow got in the mouse, and were in the path between the LED and the lens. Cleaning them off and putting the mouse back together, the problem was gone.

Having said that, I had another optical mouse that also wandered about when not in use. This time, I found out that the mouse's glide pads had come off, so the mouse sat a slight angle to the desk when not in use. Replacing the pad, (and making the mouse level again) fixed the problem.

My mousepad is currently a textured vinyl desk. And i used to use my holographic mouse pad when i had my ball mouse, but my optical mouse hates it with vengance. Ill check for loose connections, and its a wired one.

Is it at an angle to the desk? a missing foot? at college we had some Benq optical mice, and if you tilted one side up a few degrees, the cursor would start moving of it's own accord, and we have had nothing like that with the current MS set.

yeah, optical mice don't like reflective mouse pads/surfaces, try it on a sheet of white paper for a while, if it stops, just find a mousepad that has a fabric top.

Yea, its missing one foot, bottom left corner. (it the cord is the top). And this mouse pad was worse than reflective, if was holographic, like them baseball cards, and the mouse always jumped all over the screen. Im looking at getting a ratpad though, and am going to try to sort the foot problem today.

Yes. Your optical mouse is possessed. Your dog too. But worst of all, your pc is possessed. J/K
