Came across the bit-tech forums of course because of my subscription to Custom PC (THE best magazine). I've just put together a new build (first time I've built a system) and everything is working perfectly, im getting nice cooling all round, etc etc. I've noticed when I'm reading Graphics card reviews, the Idle temperature listed is usually very low, in the low teens or even single figure. However when I'm sitting at the desktop, aero enabled, with nothing open at all my 5770 (according to MSI Afterburner) runs at a constant 47 degree temperature. Is this a problem or does this card just run hot anyway? Running any heavy duty game lifts this to anything over 70, even for something like Portal, and even to 55-60 degrees for something like World of Warcraft. Thanks in advance for any info on this !
This is likely to be the delta T value, this is the temp difference between room temp and the temp of the card, so if the room is say 20c + 15c for idle, then the card is about 35c. Most of these are tested on a table/outside of a case, or in a case with good cooling. The temps you see are about right for that card.
Ah right cheers, noob mistake by me. Just that it lists it just as 'GPU Temperature' that fooled me. But anyway thanks for clearing it up.
Don't worry, It is a normal temp for a GPU. As exemple, a GTX 480 can go over 95 with a stresstest an run around 60 in Idle. For those who had a 4870X2 it was around 75 in idle
I too have a 5770 and it idles at 41c in a 26c room, though it does have the fan from a Freezer 7 Pro cpu cooler blowing across my hdd straight onto it lol I'd say your temp is completely fine
Cool thanks for the replies, thought I'd ask and be better safe than sorry. GPU is performing well though, liking it so far
My Saphire 5770 Vapor-X runs at 38-40c on idle so 47c seems a little high. Good airflow can lower the temps. I have an Antec 300 case and the air flow is great. I have a side fan that brings in cool air onto the GPU. I use MSI afterburner as well and by tweaking the fan speeds the card never goes above 60-62c at full speed. If you are hitting 70c then adjust the fan speed to 80-90% when your temp gets to 60c and that should do the trick. The 5770 was a great purchase by you. It is by far the best card I've had and handles everything in a breeze. Will definitely add a second card for crossfire within the year.
Humm Its seems nothing, Its only mean that you have a better air flow, not thats his card is to hot. The fact is, around 47 Idle 76 Full speed is absolutely normal for this card. Call us if the thing hit 90.
GPUs always run hotter than CPUs. This is normal. High-end cards will happily run at temps that would cause a CPU to burn up. Just consider the TDP of a performance GPU: somewhere around the 185W mark. A multi-core CPU by contrast has a TDP of 65-95W.
Thanks for all the replies ! Ok I'm definitely not concerned any more, now that I know these temperatures are normal. Nah I'm not getting anything like that heh, so I'm also reassured that I've built my system somewhat well, and getting good airflow Thanks again to everyone.
Don't forget you've got a Vapor-X cooler on that Would easily account for that 8-10 degrees idle difference i reckon.
Don't worry about temperatures - everyone is different depending on room temperature, case cooling etc. All you need to worry about is if it goes over the maximum. Most cards can take up to around 100 degress celsius, so until you start getting close to that, theres no need to worry My GTX 260 idles at around 60C usually, and can hit 80C under 100% load.
yep depends on the ambient.. like in the winter my 260 idles 41C but summertime gets 100F +, see up to 50C the load should be the same though if you have proper cooling
