Im really interested in building my own PC and over the next couple of months i will be gathering the parts to do so. Only problem is after reading a few magazines and reading on the internet it seems that there will be new components released over the next couple of months which will be better then the old stuff and i dont want out of date tech in my new build. Is this the time of year when companies release there new parts if not when is? Also would waiting till christmas be better when all the new stuff is released? Thanks
Depends. there will allways be newer faster kit around in a years time (see mores law), so waiting for the fastest / next best thing is a wait you'll never win. The question has go to be more like: Will investing now give enough gains to offset the performance increase by waiting? So to explain that. If you wait 5 months to Christams, prices may drop a little, a new chip may come out (i5 ?), but you wait 5 months. So you get better kit in 5 months but use sucky stuff for the next five months or You buy now and get what you can and get to play for the next five months when the new kit come out you feel a bit pissed cos your now stuck with older kit. bearing in mind that in 12 months it will all be superseeded and/or cheaper. It really is a lose/lose or win/win. Personally I think, you should upgrade when your current kit nolonger dose the job and you've got the cash. If your current kit dose the job, you dont need to upgrade. if you've not got the cash. well.... But ignore me, I upgrade sumut ever few months and I havn't got the cash..... Not much help really
What unknownamer said is true. But if there was ever a time to wait, it was now. Lynnfield, DirectX 11 and Windows 7 are all around the corner, so it's likely that the entire market will be completely different in a couple of months, and there may be some good deals to be had. If I were you, I'd wait just a little longer.
I'm ready to build a new system, but I'm definitely waiting for the new lynnfield CPUs to come out before i buy anything. I'll wait till mid september anyway... I have to get it built by the end of september because i'm off to uni then.
Thanks for the replies and the answers i sadly expected. Im looking for a christmas build by the looks of things. By then hopefully i will have more money and be able to get a better PC anyway. Just hope my Sony Vaio isnt smashed by then because its so slow Is there any idea of prices for the new Lynnfield, DirectX 11 GPU`s and i5? Also when are they expected to be released?
I am in exactly the same position. Was gonna wait till xmas so I can try and get the mrs to buy me a componant for my pressie. The sods law my PSU blew up on my existing PC yesterday. It is still an ok PC though X2 4400, 8800GT so I have just bought Coolermaster UCP 900 from ebuyer for £99 (bargain) and plan to use that in the PC i build soon. To be honest I am thinking I will chose i7 but I will be v annoyed if i5 proves to better bang for your buck
Now as in NOW is most certainly NOT a good time to build, the i5 and HD5870 + other DX11 cards will be coming out in September, I am building my rig at christmas, keeping an eye on prices, AM3 is still young, LGA1156 will be young, so wait a bit, the DX11 cards will knock the DX10 cards round the head and cause major price drops all the way down the chain, just wait a bit, at around Christmas time, then you can treat yourself
Lynnfield (i5) is already on sale in Taiwan, with processors in the $250 market and mid $500 market. It should release in mid September. DX11 cards: ATi has scheduled a meeting on September 10th, so that is when their DX11 cards will be announced (Not much info whether they'll ship on that date). It will probably by like the initial HD48xx release, with one card at $299 and one at $199. Nvidia seems to be having problems with TSMC's manufacturing process so most sources say to expect a early 2010 release. Also, these cards are expected to be much more expensive than the GTX2xx cards, because the die is so large (~570mm2!!) I'd look for cards in the $399, $599, and $699 segments, but the sales will be very slow and Nvidia will slash the prices 2 months after release.
I just ordered me a 920. Couldn't help myself. I mean... triple Dominators! That's 50% more kickass than a dual-channel Dominator kit.
tl;dr i would wait because i5 should be out pretty soon, and with i5 comes the new laptop chipset as well, and DX11 should be out around the same time, so over all, I would wait until November - February, just to play it safe so you dont drop like 1k on parts then have them put the new stuff out and you go "FFUUUUUU...." cause of it...
Correct me if i'm wrong, which is totally possible as i'm not a gamer. All games that are out on the market now will be setup to run on current DX10 cards, so is it not going to be a while till programmers get DX11 cards, then make a game to run on it. Yeah i'm sure they will make a patch of some sort which will speed up your Call of Warcraft Crysis 2 but it won't be optimised for DX11 so you won't really be using the card properly. Like I said I could and probably will be wrong, just the impression I got over the last few days while looking round at different cards / reviews / forum topics on the net. I say (like others in this thread) if you need it, get it as there is always an upgrade around the corner so how long do you wait. First thing one of my lecturers said as we started an IT course, as soon as you take it out the box its out of date!!
Right now the latest thing on the market are the ATI cards with DX10.1. Cards get released, and devs start making stuff for them. Personally, I would wait to get one of the new processors (i5, i3, i9) and go and get a DX10.1 card now, because until DX11 is released and the cards are made, theres no point in waiting for it.
TBH it's all about your budget. £400~ Now's the perfect time to buy as low end LGA775 won't be superseded till the end of the year and there's always AM3 which is pretty new. £600-700 Now's a terrible time to buy, lynnfields coming, ATI DX11 is coming so the high end cards will all get lowered prices. £1k+ It's a good time really, last chance to get a i7 920 as they will be getting discontinued and you could buy it now then get a DX11 card in september. If I was you instead of buying parts as you get money I'd just save it all up for the best deal on the day. I know it's easier to save if you have bits constantly coming to you but if you're aiming to have everything by crimbo now is not the time to do it
^^^ Basically get yourself an i7 (or if your really need the power, wait for i9), and then a DX11 card when they come out.
I know, tbh I think DX11 is a total flop anyway but being futureproof is good, even if DX11 shows itself to be useless we can have the powerful GPUs - i mean HD5870 at 1.5 teraFlops is madness, can you imagine folding on the next gen of NVIDIA cards
I think this confirmed what i've been thinkin, i'm in the market for a new tv aswell as a few hardware upgrades, i think the Tv just took presedence.
I know windows 7 is coming out in october (think its the 22nd) but not sure on the others. Are there any good websites you can go to for news on the lastest things?
