I have 2 500GB WD AAKS HDD which are currently used for data but will be buying a 1TB drive to replace them. Therefore they can get used for a raid setup. Does this provide alot better loading and general speed? Which raid should I choose (1 or 0)? I have K8N Diamond Motherboard, how would I get raid to work with this?

    Thanks

I can't answer the questions as to which is faster any better than Google can, but I can say with some bitterness that you should back up really, really frequently because they will pick a time to explode and it'll be sooner than you think.

They will be appreciably faster; generally HDDs are the slowest bit of a system, so anything that can help here you'll feel.

Generally RAID0 is worth setting up and using only if you work with (copy/move) large files (video etc) and/or unzip large files regularly, otherwise just stick with single HDD setup...

As regards reliability, I have used a RAID0 (2 HDD setup) since 2004 to run my OS on and in all that time I have not had an array fail on me, but in saying that I do have a good backup system in place, so even if it does I will be back up and running quite quickly without any loss of data.

Have a read at your manual to begin with...

    EDIT: RAID...

RAID0 and RAID1 work very differently, and in fact they are used for different purpouses. If you're after the speed increase, you should use RAID0.

raid 1 is where one disc is used as a backup of the other disc so there is no performance gain. Raid 0 is where the 2 discs are set up as 1 drive reading and writing simultainiously, therefore performance gain. Only problem is you are twice as likely to have somethin go wrong and if it does go caput itll be harder to get your data back soits agood idea to backup. If your using an asus motherboard it can be a little tricky setting up if you have a sata powered cd drive as once you switch to raid all sata ports become raid sata ports until you get windows up and running (well this is my experience on the two asus boards Ive had). In my experience the best thing to do is load and install windows from a usb device if you have an asus mb
