Hey everyone, I have a project log going on but until I get a new camera next week I didn't want to post any more crappy pics in it.. I have a question for anyone that's used silicone/adhesive. I cut out the rear fan section of my Chieftec case and made my own plexi fan holder. It' a tight fit and I dont want to attach it with nuts/bolts or screws. I want to know if there is a silicone or adhesive strong enough to support it and the two Antecs fans bolted to it. Here's a pic of the plexi fan holder (Vinyl died)-a few bolts to hold it in for now: Here's the holder by the section I need to mount it in: Temp held in place: Anything out there strong enough to hold this holder w/fans to aluminum?? Permanant is ok since I can remove the fans(bolted on). Thanks for the help! DDK
most strong plastic adhesives should be able to hold it, i cant see the fans being heavy enough to pull it off. just got some strong epoxy stuff. then get some superglue and glue yourself to the ceiling
Thanks for the advice. I have never used silicone before so could anyone reccomend a good brand and type? Thanks! DDK
if u look in the sealent section of the DIY store they should have something able to do this. Make sure it says adhesive though because some is just grease. Of course, jbweld or some decent epoxy will do this much better. Be sure to sand the points on the plexy where u apply the adhesive.
Silicone holds large aquariums together and they have LOTS of pressure pushing against the glass, so it should be fine in this application. I used to silicone to hold my fans in place and it works fine. Stops vibrations too
Really? JBWeld with hold plexi and aluminum? I didn't know that. I would like it to stay put..lol... Suggestions for epoxy/silicone brands? Are they all about the same? Thanks for the help guys! DDK
I just checked on JBWelds website.. Sounds like it would work! 8270 ADHESIVEWELD : All rigid substrates such as metals, wood, hard plastic, glass and ceramics can be permanently bonded with Adhesiveweld. Please note, different substrates can be bonded together, such as wood to metal, metal to plastic DDK
I would rather use an epoxy myself. The reason why is: your done in five minutes. Epoxy takes about 24 hours to fully cure but will be stuck on for good in under twenty minutes. Silicone will take much longer to dry(overnight at the very least). And you can't touch or move your case until it does.
HA... it's taken months to get this far on the case, time has no meaning with this modded case. I don't care how long whatever I use takes to cure, I just want it to stay put! Thanks! DDK
Or 3m sells some sweet stuff. I guess they now have double sided tapes that hold metals together as well as screws do!
But some of those awsome adheisives that they make are very hard to get ahold of unless your in an industry that uses them. some auto paint stores sell these for car moulding. But the even better ones are hard to find.
i got some 1x1 inch double sided adhesive foam squares which will hold 2 lbs each. I used four of them to mount a case window once. Cuttable to the correct size and shape too.
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll look around the hardware store next time I go. I'll try JB and an epoxy on some test pieces.. Thanks DDK
interesting analogy... the pressure works outwards surely, thus pushing the sealant ever tighter... but nm i'd go with araldite or something like that... or even good old superglue.
How would it be pushing the sealant tighter? If the edges of the panes of glass (where the silicone is holding together) are trying to get away from each other it's pulling on the sealant.
