It seems that most people go for the 1TB F3 Spinpoint when building a rig currently, however are the 1.5TB and 2TB flavours of the same (F3 or F4) disks comparable in terms of performance (access speed), or is there a limiting factor/degradation in choosing the larger disks? On paper the larger capacity disks look to have the same performance (access time 8.0mS), but have a lower GB/£ price? The 1TB has is 7,200rpm and the larger disks are 5,400 - but the access times are the same; what's the difference (apart from capacity and rotation speed)??? In the real world, say fetching/writing music, photo's, videos, with these larger traditional disks, would you notice the difference between the 1TB and the 2TB devices? If not, where would you see the difference show up? Thanks.
Depends what you'll be using it for. As you've got another thread on SSDs, i assume this would be a media/storage drive? If so, then you won't really notice much with it to be honest, and the 2TB F4 would be the better option. If you want it for your OS/Programs, then there will be a performance difference, though how noticeable it would be I can't comment.
Exactly right - I'm going to be using (in all probability) a C300/128GB for O/S and a few important apps, and then "something else" (like these big Samsung's) for the rest, common apps/data, games, music, photo and video storage. So, if I understand your comment, I might as well go for the 1.5 or 2TB Samsung's, as I wouldn't notice the difference with general day to day use?
I have a couple of the 2TB's and their louder than my F1 (which is pretty much silent). I've heard the F4 2TB fixes this issue though.
Yup. F4 2TB Review Nice and quiet with low power usage. Its pretty much the perfect storage drive. I'll be getting one in a couple of weeks to go in my new build i think.
