In my eyes the General has been moving towards 4chan, which absolutely blows, and the Hardware-section has become less helpful towards new users.
I've never really got the whole rep thing, since there are no rules to giving it out, it means nothing.
I don't think the attitude has changed in a bad way. People are only unhelpful in the hardware section if the OP doesn't read the sticky threads about how to ask for help, most threads I see are helpful with a touch of humour General: Surely anything goes within the rules?
you are just jealous everyone else has oodles of green dots back on topic, i agree about the willy waving contest that is going on in Hardware. intelligent thread about your personal reviews/unboxing with benchmark numbers are fine, but just fan club threads of certain product just encourages biased fanboys and trolling.
Which thread doesn't contain benchmark numbers? I have never seen one that is just waving a giant willy without some form of test results.
I was merely trying to raise awareness without creating confrontation. It's very easy to hide behind a keyboard and dish out abuse in a faceless manner. It's clear that I wasn't alone in my assessment and I'm glad to have the backing of the mods and key community members, who hopefully can effect change amongst the rest.
Currently? AoE's fermi thread. One that I helped derail, not that I'm proud of that by any means. It was already way off course before I started trolling. If it gets back on course though, it would be a good place to compare Fermi cards for temps/clocks/benchie results. Ideally there should be one on AMD as well. Damn your Ninja skills Sentinel lol But I agree (though I am quite possibly a perpertrator) that we are often too fast to troll.
All i want to say on this matter if im one of perpertrator i want to apologise for my action as i only say things in jest. I have made my feelings clear on AoE's Fermi thread, i came to bit-tech to learn and help and i think i have strayed from that path and reading this thread and a few other threads from people leaving made me realise that if this continues, in a worst case scenario, the forum could be shut down or be taken over by spammers and trolls. I dont want that becuase bit-tech is more then a forum to me its become a huge part of my life and its a place where i can escape the stresses of life for few hours. I dont want people to leave especially people that have been part of this community for a long time as they have become friends. i also want new people to join and not feel alienated. I think we need to all look at ourselves and ask the question are we doing enough?
I love the 'look at what ive just bought 3 off' threads. They give me an insight into the top end hardware....the stuff that im not allowed to spend all my money on! Especially seeing how they perform. Im an enthusiast, so these things interest me
I think 99% of the time Bit-Tech is awesome, full of incredibly bright people willing to share their knowledge. It's just sometimes, things go a bit wrong, whether it be someone having a bad at work and just trolling or whatever. I think the epeen threads don't help, but when they contain benchmarks and things, it's good as it shows actual helpful stuff. The Geekbench thread is an awesome example. Full of people, myself included, just trying to get the absolute best out of their hardware. I too strayed waaaaaay off the path, but I hope I at least help some people sometimes.
I also like the 'look what i have just bought' thread as like bdigital i like seeing hardware that i cannot afford, its hardware pr0n BUT and its a big BUT i dont like the comments that are made which then leads to trolling. As i said we all need to ask ourselves the question that are we doing enough within the forum? Are we making relevent comments regarding the threads? Are we helping as much as we can?
I know I have a part to play in this. Hell I was the one that mentioned it, the reason was based around the fact that people started to snipe back and forth at each other. The thread was way off track even prior to my comments. I placed the comment in an attempt to defuse the whole fiasco, which was playground stupidity at its best. Do I regret posting it? No Do I think it was trolling? No. In regards to the rep, the whole rep system is a complete waste of time and I for one don’t care for it. I like Bit-tech and in the time I have been here I think I have become fond of many people. The world is a changing place, all the time, this forum will evolve but it needs to evolve with guidance and boundaries. I would argue that the mods should have stepped in before it was ever derailed in the first place. There is a fine line between challenge and abuse, but there IS a line. If we feel that comments hold less value, snipes and flames are increasing, report it, curb it. Take the hard line, start enforcing the accepted boundaries (not a sticky at the top of the forum, a timed band with PM warning type) and this style of posts will stop and will VERY quickly flush out those members that are here for the wrong reasons. I have seen and used this method before, it works and it work quickly. Just my 2c.
I totally agree with you flame. I don't think that threads started about newly purchased hardware create negativity. It's more to do with how they're written that divides the community. If they're worded to sound like the OP is 'considerably richer than yowwwww', then of course it will attract retorts, trolling and general unrest - and some of late have been ill-willed one upmanship. Still, it's good to see the response to this thread. I hope it makes people think about how they portray themselves in this community in the future.
It has certainly made me look at how I post. I seem to have become less and less helpful, but that's gonna stop as of now.
im the same as noiz i also seem to have become less and less helpful and as noiz said it will stop right now. i will not stop my banter and i like to have a bit of a laugh as the next person but i will curb my replys to make sure they are appropriate
You trying to say I'm a troll there flame???? lol No, I agree that banter is definitely not something to be stamped out. How boring would the forum be without a little bit of cheek? As you have also said Flame, Bit-Tech is a huge part of my life. So much so I constantly get grief for spending more time on here than I do with the fiancee I wouldn't have helped create the marketplace rep system if I didn't love BT.
Yes i am noiz...there i said it happy now?? I think everyone needs to change and it would be nice for people to start today maybe we can improve the forum to a stage where the people that have left may decide to come back Plus we could be in a position that we can attract a lot more new members that might bring in a whole to wealth of experiance and knowledge
The forums are a busy place and there is a limited number of mods. Having been a mod on a much smaller forum than this I can assure you that the level of spam you receive is mind boggling. The mods do an outstanding job of keeping Bit-Tech running and keeping it from anarchy.
