I'm looking to upgrade my laptop with an SSD hard drive and hopefully give it a much need speed boost. I have a Toshiba Portege which currently has a 40GB 1.8" 4200 RPM HD (MK4004GAH) which apparently is the same kind of HD that you used to get in the 40GB ipod.

Looking around the usual e-retailers, there don't seem to be any 1.8" SSDs available to buy, however, I have seen this roundup at Tom's Hardware including supposedly 2 1.8" SSDs. One of them is from some unknown Chinese manufacturer and the other from Crucial: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-x25-m-vertex,2399-3.html

But, if you look at the photo, although the article claims the 128GB HD is 1.8", it's clearly exactly the same size as the 2.5" and looking at Crucial's website, they don't seem to produce 1.8" drives.

Am I wasting my time looking for such a drive? Are Toshiba the only laptop manufacturer that uses 1.8" HDs? What about netbooks, do they also use 2.5" size drives?

Sony & HP use 1.8" HDD's with a zif interface on their ultra portables. Netbooks use 2.5" drives (as their cheaper).

Not seen any 1.8" SSD's yet but I'll check with distribution

Yes there is. IIRC 7dayshop had Intel 1.8" SSDs on offer a short time ago. Probably the best you can get actually..
