Ok so im making the switch and im buying a Macbook Pro 17" this week or next. my only problem is i have this problem, i cant leave things stock. I already know what i want to do to the new mac.

You know the lid, with the glowing apple on it? is there anyplace that sells the lids without the apple?

I want to make my own lid but with a different cut out.

    Any help?

    thanks all.

    117" ? O.O

You gotta tell me where to get one! :p

I've never seen macBook mods.. Don't see why it shoudn't be do-able though I doubt there are any resellers of lids since Apple is very controlling on its products.

not really... the apple is cool :S

if you want to make a cutout why not just design one slightly larger than the one already there?

(also i would really recommend against any kind of modding on the lid itself, taking it apart is a right pain and you will invariably break something)

The places that do notebook laser etching can probably get another lid, but it'll still have the Apple cutout in it. Part of it is that the glowing bit sits flush, so you'd have to sand down the whole thing in order to put a solid (or alternatively-cut) lid.

You can change the colours of the apple apparently if you can't get hold of a lid...

There's a company that sells stickers that simply go over the top. Or you can open up the lid and place it under.

that's really easy to do. the white of the apple is just a peice of paper, so you just replace it with whatever.

The risk of damaging your Mac is very big. Everything is really squised in thightly in the mac laptops. I wouldn't wanna risk damaging it.

If you want to mod it, then why not get one of those stickers for the Mac's? You can get them in your own design. Or get it etched, painted or bouth?

because the design i want to make is much more intricate. it would also be larger. as for the "glowing bit" im lead to understand that it is just from the screens illumination.

as for the plastic fill once the lid cut is made just get a thin piece of plastic put the lid on a cookie tray, put the plastic sheet in the lid then put in the oven for a short time, plastic becomes pliable and gravity handles the forming.

and just taking the shell off is fairly simple.

The Apple logo is indeed lit by the LCD's backlight, but you'd still need to file it down or something in order to substitute in an alternative or cover the area with a solid lid. Or find some way to build it out if you're looking to put something bigger in the same location.

I'd be worried about the lid bending aswell if you heat it too much.

Good luck getting the lid apart, I've taken my macbook pro down apart completely but the screen is something I just couldn't get open. It's clipped together (snap together) so to take it apart you either got to damage it or work out how to force it apart.
