Greetings, My bits for my new pc are coming together and I am wondering about my PSU. So far its: mobo: asus p6td deluxe graphics: gigabyte 9800 silent cell 6gb ram various fans case: antec 902 a generic dvd/cd burner 7 sata drives (F3 7200 spinpoints 1tb) I was thinking of a coolermaster ucp 900W. Is that too much? Is it really a problem having too much? thanks David
You can't have too much, as your rig will draw as much as it needs. It's always nice to have a bit of headroom however, in case you upgrade etc. I'd go for it. Anyway.. 7 drives will eat a fair bit.. it won't be overspecced by as much as you think... but it is overkill a little bit.
The wattage will be a bit overkill, but it won't do any harm, other than to your wallet Most PSUs are most efficient at around the 70-90% draw (I think), so it could also harm you electricity bill slightly.
I have a HX 850 powering my rig. Total overkill but it has a 7 year warranty so I know I am set psu wise for years and years.
Won't hurt your system, but I think most people will say it'd be better to get a higher quality PSU over a higher wattage one. I'd take a Corsair with lower wattage over a Coolermaster at the same price.
or one of the new seasonic 90% eff or the new be quiet psu's which are cheaper but still give 88% eff which is very good go for a 650w psu
The reason i chose the coolermaster is because it is available in australia and gets a real high rating on the review here.
It won't do any harm. As Pookeyhead has said your computer will only draw as much power as it needs. You will pay more than you need to to purchase the PSU. Typically a PSU will have a peak efficiency at around 50-60% of rated load. If you buy a 900W PSU and build a system that needs 400W you will never get into that peak efficiency band and when your computer is idling, typically between 100 and 200W, it will be at less than 20% of rated load. In that area a PSUs efficiency can drop off considerably so there is potential for you to use more power than you need. Even if we ignore the environmental impact, it will still make your power bills higher.
Try this I would expect 500 - 550W should be fine. If you are overclocking you may wish to bump it up to 600 - 650W.
Take an 850-1050w Enermax Revolution as an example here. Even if your PC idles and drains 200w, your still in the 85-91% efficieny band ( Which happens to be 20%-100% load ). Dropping down to a meagre 100w drain still won't push you down below 80%. As long as you buy a good PSU efficiency shouldn't drop off by more than 7% between high load and low.
