I have a short question to ask you all-
Is Windows ME just pants or is it me?
Just got a lovely new setup (AMD2600+ 256RAM 40GB and a measly 64MB GEforce 2) and its running on Windows ME. My old computer was a hunk of ---- but it was on 98 and it never crashed or messed up EVER. I've whopped the side off the case and stuck another fan in, which helped but I SWEAR that it's windows ME thats messing it all up. All my lovely games keep crashing (which is the main reason I forked out for the thing) but little programs like Wordpad and IExplorer run fine. I'm considering 5 options:

    1. Get Linux- I've heard its really stable and cheap.

    2. Get Win98 or XP - Same as above, but Ive used them b4.

    3. Shove fans absolutely everywhere, cos it does get a bit hot- and I havent even overclocked it or put in a 128MB geforce yet.

    4. Download even more WIndows updates, games patches and drivers in the faint hope that this'll sort it out.

    5. Shoot Bill Gates in the head.

Please help because I can only play Giants Citizen Kabuto for about 5-15mins before it dies, and its really funny and quite a good game.

    Thanks.

Whilst I've never used Windows ME so can't really comment much, the reason why I haven't used it is because I listened to what everyone else had to say about it!

I'd be inclined to think that your graphics card drivers may be to blame if games are cutting out after 15 minutes or less.

If you haven't used your copy of Windows 98 on another PC you could stick that on there so at least it works whilst working out where to go next? If you can, XP is probably the way to go for games really. You can play your old Windows 98 games in '98 compatibility mode.

Much as I loathe to say it, if you are planning on playing games, Linux probably isn't the best choice for now. I know there's WineX and it's possible, but it's not ideal.

I have real issues with these old OS' not having Event Viewers!

Giants Citizen Kabuto is pretty funny, haven't played that in a while:

"My name's Ahmed, but you can call me Timmy"

    Is the GF2 passively cooled?

What games are you trying to play?

NEVER ever ever ever install, use, or look at WinME if you value stability or reliability at all. Personal experience. Get XP ASAP.

If you want to learn Linux, then go for that, but remember it can be quite a lot of work to get something working (not quite as easy as Plug N play). I'd personally go for XP, just make sure you get SP1, it seems to be very stable once Sp1 is installed.

Oh and Windows ME is not worth the code it's written in. It's a big pile of poo.

Well personally I prefer Windows 2000.

But I would say get XP.

Oh and I've only used ME a few times and it's terrible.

My personal (horrendious) experience with WindowsME: EVERY and I do mean EVERY computer I've EVER worked on that had WindowsME installed on it, was a load of junk. I threw anything else (even 95) on it, and it became a whole lot more stable. Unless you don't have a wife or a life, DON'T GET OR USE ME.

Ditto! WinME is a waste of time and money. I've finally gotten so fed up that I plan to upgrade to Win98 this week, as I cannot afford 2000 or XP, which are both much better operating systems.

blah, i dunno what everyone has against ME, i used the thing for two years and never once had any trouble with it, compared to that of 98 which just caused me large amounts of pain and anger, but hey, everyone to their own i suppose (although im on XP now obviously).... bad workmen blaming their tools eh? ;)

    The Answer:

Use win2k, xp, or server 2k3. My vote goes to 2k, personally. I don't like xp at all. Something about it just doesn't feel right... actually I think it's the nice spyware that's included in sp1... with win2k you can go get sp2 and you're fixed up without spyware. And nothing has run as cleanly for me as 2k. I lub my 2k.

I have a computer running windows ME that hasn’t crashed once since installing it 3 months ago. My XP machine rarely can go a whole week without crashing.

Then you've corrupted your XP machine

ME is basically a prettier version of 98, released to fill the gap between 98 and XP. XP/2K is based on NT, which is more stable.

Ask anyone who know something about computers which is better, XP will win everytime.

I’ve must of reinstalled XP 3 times already on my computer. I know something will happen to it next month so I will have to reinstall again. This time I will dual boot ME with XP. That way I can actually have a reliable system.
