My friend's laptop is having a problem.

Turn it on, get the options for boot order, recovery, etc.
Moves on to the Vista loading bar. Seems to be fine.
Then goes to a black screen with only the mouse showing. The mouse is moving, but i get nothing else.

I tried booting up in safe mode, same situation.

Any ideas as to what the problem may be? And more importantly, how to fix it.

*EDIT* It will also go into screen saver mode and display that just fine.

Sounds like Windows is having issues starting the session or Winlogon. Never heard of such an issue before. A repair install might fix it.

Boot in safe mode and try to restore to an earlier state.
If that fails, try repairing the install.

I was thinking a repair install as well.

If I use the repair install, that won't cause a loss of data right? I just want to be absolutely sure as it isn't my computer.

It should not touch the data, but better safe than sorry. Backup.

It might change any settings you previously changed in Windows. But it shouldn't touch your files.
Do what mm vr said though: Backup.

    Well I got it resolved.

I first tried to roll it back to a previous working state, about a week ago as the problem just happened, fail
Tried the 'repair startup' offered on the computer, fail
Tried the Vista Disc reapir install option, fail
    Tried some regedits, fail
Figured what the heck, I rolled it back to a version in mid June, TADA! It worked.

Now for all the updates it didn't have and probably should have had.

    Well done. :p

Just make sure you know what you installed since June and don't install iffy stuff again.
