Windows Issues with Blue Screen Of Death (winXP)

    Hey, I am having a little bit of trouble with my dell 8600 laptop when ever i try and boot it up i get blue screen of death saying un-mountable hard drive this happen every time even in safe mode

    this is the second time this has happened the last time it was b4 xmas and when i came bac from holidays every thing was working WTF!

    I have no clue how to fix it i cant reinstall windows but i can boot slax(linux) of the CD and see the contents of the harddrive

    Has any one got any ideas of whats going on?

    Could be a hard drive failure.

    Thats what the BSOD sounds like if the hard drive can't be used.

    you could open the hard disk cage, pull disk out, and make sure all the cables are attached correctly.

    Buzzons and DougEdey are right. We've had the same problem here at work on some of our laptops, and in every scenario it was either a dead drive altogether, or the controller was dead on the board (most often).

    Either way, if you can see your files some other way, grab 'em while you can. I hope your rig is still under warranty, because you're going to need it.

    No i am out of warrenty i dont think the hard drive is dead cause this has happened b4 and the computer worked fine for about a month as far as checking the cables i thought it might me a loose cable on the hard drive but its a laptop and i dont know how to open it i dont think i want to know lol i might have to take it to a shop cry more money

    If you post or PM me a pic of the laptop, I can probably help you get in and check the cable.

    If you've got the money and downtime isn't an issue, then a shop might be a good bet as they ought to warranty whatever work they do.

    Hard drive may be failing. Especially if it's happened before. 99% of hard drives don't just die, they send out warning signals first.

    Google did a study of thousands of hard drives and found that most of the ones that failed didn't produce any warnings via SMART
