On my weekly trip to the goodwill computer store. (Donated PC parts, but awsome modding gear) I found a Slot Loading CD-Rom drive, I know quite a few people on Bit have been searching for one, but didn't want to spend the money for the Pioneer DVD model. Here are the specs on the drive: Manufacturer: Hitachi Model: CDR-8230 Type: AVCP Drive Rev: A0 Manufactured: Sep 1997 I hooked it up and it works perfectly. This drive is perfect for modding as there is a whole mechanizm that pulls the CD to the back of the drive, and is perfect for a window mod. 50% of the CD is still visible when in operation, as opposed to the 25% that shows through on the Pioneer DVD window mods. Looks just as good as the Pioneer when dyed black, and will work well with my Back-Lit Slot mod (But status switches are in front) This is a good CD-Rom to use on a MP3 box, or other mod when a DVD is not needed. Here is a google search for ya: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&q=cdr-8230+hitachi Here are some images for ya:
We all knew you did exist (thread is named "I do exist") lol... I have one like that on a server at work, it comes in SCSI as well, and was stock on some of the compaq servers In one of my clusters... Didn't know everyone was looking for them, I might just have a few... Looks like good potential though...
Do that was embarasing...fixed now... Actualy the barcode near the front is labeled with a Compaq Part number. I like the moving tray mechanism, I am thinking of making a wooden Mp3 Player with this verticaly mounted to load CD's (Doh this will get done after the Media PC, Car Mp3 PC, and like fifty other projects...)
Hmm. If your looking for a slot load cdrw, open up a iMac (with CRT) and see who the manufacturer is.
We have those in a load of desktop Compaq machines at my work here. I would really like to see a cd-rw slot in, that would be sweet! I seem to remember somebody made a cd drive that was same size as normal, but took in 3 disks through a slot mechanism! It then showed as 3 drives on your system. Cannot remember who made it!

that slim slot loading drive is sweet. i need something like that. any1 know the dimensions and/or the cost in the UK?
Thanks for that how much you recon it would be to post to the UK and how much for the drive im currently poor so i might not be able to aford it for a while, but thanks ever somuch for the information P.S. sorry for the hijack, nice slot drive Zap and you have dyed it already Sweet.
Sid: think about £100,--. As the post says, contact Hammer PLC for exact price. Dimensions are about 146mm wide by 13mm high. Two will fit on top of each other in one 5.25" bay (which is my intention), in fact, even three stacked will fit! omfgAaron: Just e-mail National Panasonic in the USA (get their e-mail address from their US site) and ask them to e-mail you a list of distributors. That's how I got the UK address. I don't think Soldam will sell theirs seperately from the case. Anyway importing from Japan is just as much hassle as importing from the UK...
£100 u think thats all it'll be? yeh im contacting hammer 2moro. yeh, i kinda figured it'd be 140ish wide. i need to find out the length. 13mm height is perfect for what i need tho. ill contact panasonic about it. cheers
