That sounds likely, but I think it must be different from manufacturer to manufacturer whether they have a crowbar circuit that can deal with cross-line shorts. I've shorted the 5v to 12v on my Tagan ( ) and it was fine.
Unplug the computer Just unplug it for about an hour and then just plug it back in and it should work just fine. (unless you bought a crappy power supply)
Some supplies have a latch circuit that will keep it off for a certain amount of time to ensure that the fault condition (e.g. short/overheat) has cleared. If the components are tested dead in other PCs, then there isn't much hope with that option
Ya never know, I stuck my router's 12v power plug into my modem's 5v socket (and vice-versa, but undervolting doesn't tend to kill stuff) and it was OK. For a while anyways... it kicked the bucket a week or so ago, but that event was a good six months back. Anyways, best of luck with replacements.
No offense, did you read the rest of the posts he made? He already tried all of the components (PSU included) in other machines, and they DON'T WORK. You told him all he needed to do is plug it back in after an hour. Don't you think he would have tried that already? In addition, he stated that the PSU was an Antec TruBlue 480W, which from my experience is a very good PSU. I'm sorry to sound like a jackass, but I hate it when people make mindless replies because they don't bother reading the whole thing. ~Adam ::EDIT:: I hope you can get some of your money back. It sucks when stuff like this happens.
I had such an accident myself. I plugged out the fan and everything was working fine (or i am very very very lucky or you are very very very unlucky)
Try resetting the cmos? Sometimes, when stuff doesnt work, if you lie it on a sheet of foil for a week (so everything metal is shorted together) it works again. It probably wont, but its worth a try. Also, you could try just replacing the circuitry on the HD.
well ya i was thinking of replacing the circuitry on the hdd but decided not to as i didn't have anything that valuable on it. just some games i downloaded and i think i have backed up anyways. but i already sold my processor and a new mobo i had won a while back with the ram. sold it all for like $350 so i didn't come out broke. but that $350 went to a down payment of my new car ^_^ so ya, no pc gaming for prob atleast 6 months maybe even more so i dont know what im going to do. still debating if i want another job ><. still trying to RMA my video card. took Sapphire like 12 days to reply to my email saying you need to contact so and so not us....thats really sad.
Hey did you try flashing the bios on the videocard? Voodoo2 is PCI yea? You might try booting it off that and flash the vbios on the AGP card if you still have it. Coarse that would likely destroy any chance of RMA if they check.. Good luck man. --------------------------- Asus P5ND2-SLi Dlx P4 561 @ 3.6ghz / 800fsb 2g Micron DDR2 @ 800mhz 2x eVGA 6800 GT's m-audio Revo 5.1 WinXP Pro x64
Yeah..thats what your supposed to do In reality, everythings hot swappable, the higher the voltage the better! Unlucky though phantomxc, that sucks to lose that much hardware just from a simple home mod like that
Thats odd... I have Antec Trueblue 480w in one of my comps and i've shorted 5v to 12v, and 12v to ground before and it just shut off and i had to boot up the comp again. Antec PSUs have overvolt protection on all rails, so it should be near impossible to damage a component let alone pretty much everything.
i did something like this once with a 80mm fan thats 2 wires touched together and a 40mm that touched the case side. the 80mm still worked after, the pc just shut down, and the 40mm blew but the computer was fine, it just restarted too.
well all i have to say is: . GFX card - Totaled . Motherboard - Totaled . Hard drives - Totaled . The look on his face when he realised what he'd done - Priceless please know i'm only joking and i too have had that face since i shorted out my 12v rail on my case once but luckily everything was fine and i feel sorry for you
