It's the US Secret Service that is responsible for protecting Ex-Presidents and yes they screwed up, big time.
Kamala Harris is the obvious choice as Biden's replacement. As Vice President, she's already on the ticket, so has access to the existing campaign funds. BTW - Doesn't Trump look old?
Yes and he had endorsed her and most of the leading alternatives have publicly backed here so it's probably a done deal. (but Adam Kinzinger made an interesting point the other week l that if she wasn't going to be on the ticket and the Biden-Harris campaign wanted to support anther ticket, they would refund donations to the donors that wanted to switch their contributions and the rest could go into a super-PAC. However thankfully this isn't necessary here).
Yes, I was going to mention the funding… Any other candidate would have to start fundraising again, but Harris, as @IanW says, has access to the 90-odd million raised so far. Not really any other choice for the Democrats.
Apparently, she's also raised another $67m since the announcement, and also received endorsments from the governors of Illinois & Michigan.
I wish her luck, but I just don't think the USA is ready for a female leader. At least not yet. PS her neck freaks me out.
As I recall there were lots of people, particularly this side of the pond that smugly claimed that Americans were too racist to elect a black president, just before they did exactly that, in an election were race wasn't a big issue.
It's not smugness dude. I wanted Hildog in, but yeah we know how that went. I wasn't surprised Obama got in. He had little competition, and is very handsome. Handsome presidents tend to do well (JFK and fam, Slick WIlly etc).
That was against a very different Republican Party though, against a much, much more respectful (and demonstrably sane) opponent. Plus Obama's race was made an issue, remember the whole birth certificate business? Back then those people were the looney fringe of the Republicans and the actual campaign politely ignored them. 16 years later the looney fringe of 2008 look positively reserved. I can see the phrase diversity hire coming up a lot in the next few months.
I'd take a crusty sock from a teenagers bedroom over Trump, so Harris doesn't have a high bar to clear, but American politics is so absolutely insane I'm highly doubtful a woman of colour is going to beat Trump. The right are going to go after her for her skin colour, some dumbass interpretation saying she can't be president (as they did with Obama), being a woman, being a VP that either got no coverage or negative coverage, and those rightwing ****nuts are going to absolutely eat it up. Couple that with what seems to always happen - Blue apathy - and I'm expecting the orange turd to be pardoning himself and quashing all charges against himself in January. Unless he straight up drops dead on live TV, like that neo nazi old guy.
