    From the beeb:

Apple's iTunes music download service has been accused by the Consumers' Association of overcharging UK users.

The group accused the service of charging UK-based customers nearly 20% more than those with addresses and payment details in France or Germany.

The group has written to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) asking it to investigate iTunes for possible breaches of EU competition rules.

Apple said its prices should be compared with other UK music downloads.

Is Apple charging too much? As I understand it, the reason why prices are more expensive in the UK is due to the extortionate amount of VAT (sales tax) levied...

Also, in related news from the Beeb:

Yahoo is buying online jukebox provider MusicMatch as it seeks to broaden its appeal to the rapidly growing audience for music downloads.
The deal, worth $160m (£89m), will see Yahoo compete with Apple and Napster in the highly lucrative digital music market.

MusicMatch has a catalogue of 700,000 songs available in 10 languages.

Users can download songs individually or pay a monthly subscription fee for unlimited listening over the net.

Broaden it's appeal? So why MusicMash... ;)

Just did some quick checking for the prices.

In France VAT is currently at 19.6 %
In Germany VAT is currently at 16%
In the UK VAT is currently at 17.5%

So you could argue that apple arn't taking VAT into consideration otherwise Germany would have the cheepest songs and France the most expensive.

At the time i post this the current exchange rate at xe.com shows 99 euro cents as being 67-68 pence so the UK is paying more at 79 pence a song and its not because we've high tax.

There probably is a case here.

0.99 euros is about 1.20 USD
0.79 pounds is about 1.40 USD

Quick Question from an ignorant American-

How come the UK is still not using the euro? I thought that part of this whole EU thing was about having a bigger more stable economy to make trade easier etc...

I'm sure that there are some good reasons, but I don't know any of them.

    Thanks.
