I just want to check what you guys think about this, I've been defragging my C drive in vista now for 4hrs, do you think it has decided to defrag every hard drive? (That would be 950GB) because I can't see how one 150gb raptor has taken so long...even though i told it to defrag the C: by right clicking it.

If you think it's been going on too long, what do you reckon, just cancel it?

Which defrag software and what method? Doesn't seem overlong if the drive is getting full.

There is 88.6gb free BUT, I just moved the 25.5gb windows.old folder from my 32-bit install.

So the hdd wasn't that full BUT it is probably very fragmented, that said, coming up to 5 hours on a 150gb hdd...can it really take that long?

I am using the vista defrag thing, which doesn't tell you what percentahe is done anymore like it did in XP

are you still using that PC? Are you moving files around while its doing things? Are you even browsing the net?

Because defrags go by a SHITLOAD quicker when you aren't doing anything.

I have used the net a little but only really to write these messages, apart from that, i've been washing and waxing my car ready for sale lol

So, this length of time isn't that bad? It's 5 and a bit hours now, never known it to take this long

Try something like Perfectdisk - you can get a 30-day free trial from their website. Works very well, is quite quick, and also clumps all your boot files together so the PC starts more quickly. Far better than the default Windows rubbish.

The "default Windows rubbish" is a cut-down version of Diskeeper, so "rubbish" it isn't.
The obvious penalty is it takes longer.

Not to mention a terabyte of space. It'll take a bit. It must look like it's either bleeding or a decidedly Republican HDD...what with all the red. :hehe:

my 150 raptor takes around 40 mins with 90gig on it and took 1 hour 30 with 130 on it a while ago. this was using windoze defragger. i suppose it depends on how fragmented the drive is, and also if the main proigrams are in the logical order, if they are not it can take a while. do you suspend all other servies from writing to the disk while defragging?

Last 2 posts - He's only defragging 150GB, and what version of windows are you using? The OP is using the VISTA defrag tool, which is explained to be slower above.

Done it now, took 6hrs in the end, the last 30 mins though was all programs shut, inc side bar, and the net pulled, and it seemed to race through.

I know some applications like nero vision allow you to set the cpu priorty on it, can this be done with Vista's defragger some how? I've got 4 cores to play with, it's not going to knock it too much.

Thanks for all the responses on a sunday as well, much appreciated by me.

Well I dont use vista so I have no idea if this works the same, but I was actually meaning the task manager. CAD your way to the task manager, open the process manager, identify the defrag process, then right click it and set the process priority to high. Thats how it works in XP, but vista is so unfamiliar I have no idea if it lets you do that anymore. And from what I've heard its very likely the UAC would give you a ******** warning if you tried. The downside is that you do end up pretty much hobbling your PC once the priority increases because anything above 'normal' priority seems to suck up every resource it can.

You can try defragging with Diskeeper pro, because it runs faster than Vista defrag. Diskeeper defrags my moderately defragmented 137 GB partition in about 10 mins max in the manual mode. Sometimes, I play around with the autodefrag feature (I dont leave it on all the time) and that too works quite nicely without fuss.

There are free trial downloads at www.diskeeper.com if you are so inclined.

I may be mistaken here, but AFAIK, the Vista defragger is not a version of Diskeeper unlike previous windows defraggers.

Hi all, Sorry if i am hijacking this thread, but i too have a sevrely fragmented drive, its an 80GB with about 17Gb freespace. Am running Vista and its become icredibly slow. Does fragmentation of the drive really create problems?

    Welcome to the forums optra;

yes it does cause problems, and I have a theory with vista that if you are not installing onto a clean drive it probably fragments the install right from the start (correct me if I am wrong in my thinking), because it doesn't delete the previous install, it just puts it into a folder so you can still access the files (it is a nice idea).

Give it a whirl, just don't use your pc at all whilst it's doing it.

I can't leave mine on over night because it is quite loud and chucks out so much heat i'd be dehydrated in the morning from sweating lol

I'll try the priority trick next time, vista's task manager is very similar to XP so it may allow me to do it.

An ancient version of Diskeeper, though. It's certainly not as good as some of the third-party defraggers.
