Has anyone noticed that people are now incorporating HTML and ads into their RSS feeds? Screenshots of what i'm on about if you've not seen this yet: slashdot: the reg: Joel On Software: Considering what XML is for, i.e. describing data, and leaving the presentation and use entirely up to the person or app using it, does anyone else agree that putting this crap into RSS/XML is wrong?? I probably understand the need for ads to keep websites afloat more than a lot of people (see the side of your screen right now ) but when it comes to actually messing with intended standards, i feel that it is crossing the line.
It's annoying as hell. And Google AdSense now has a version for RSS feeds: https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=20012
yeah, i have to agree aswell it really is annoyying. I dont see why they have to do it though as most feeds only give a clip of the story eg the reg, so if you want to read the rest of the article you click on the link go to the site read the article and see the adverts!??!! doesn't make any difference in my opinion, they should remove them from feeds. it can't be that hard to parse the feed yourself though strip out the adverts turn it into another feed for your favourite feed reeder though would it?? I might have to have a bash.
yea, shocking isnt it why would you view the feed in a browser like that tho? you might aswell go to the homepage of hte site and look at the stories that way livemarks are awesome because you can just at a glance see all the headlines without having to view the whole site
I like SharpReader because it has little MSN sign-in style popups with headlines. click on it, and you view the article in the program. Great stuff.
Lots of reasons! 1) I don't need to have a separate app open for RSS 2) The search feature is an extension of spotlight, so searching RSS feeds happens as fast as I can type my query which is often dead handy 3) Nice, simple interface for selecting items from today/yesterday/last week etc etc (screenshot attached) as well as being able to alter the excerpt length on the fly - so i can go from the full excerpt to just headlines like live bookmarks if i wish. It archives them too (unlike FF? dont quote me on that ) 4) I can combine feeds, so loading a feed from say The Reg, Slashdot and our news and then searching is possible, and so is grouping feeds (having a set of rss feeds updating in one tab and another set in another). here's a screenshot of slash + the reg + our news updating and munged into one. It is pretty neat.
fair enough, guess you use rss differently than i do i only use it for new items so searching etc is useless to me and yea livemarks aren't archived but then if i want to look for really old news articles i'd probably go to the site and search there
I use RSS for new news/article searching as it saves time this way. All I get is the page title linking to the thing in question. Tbh I'd go to the site if I wanted to see that. - H. Edit - RTT, your El Reg and /. pics don't seem to be working. Edit 2 - They work in IE
They're working fine here. Ontopic: I agree that RSS should be kept simply to text, and then if people are interested they can click to read more about a subject.
made me sick on my coffee, the problem is i can't exactly stop using google, because the search engine is just soo much better than the competition. Why are people blowing up comuters on tubes, someone needs to blow up some lawyers.
