Seriously, that's a really stupid bet to make. I was sleeping on the street when i was 20, but I wouldn't think of making that bet about anyone, even people that i've met, unless i actually knew them really well, as in were close friends for years. I've come across many people that were in far worse situations than i ever was.

I believe you, and i bet you know that you come across that way on the internet, because sometimes you are just another asshole in the internet :hehe:

I've seen it too many times here on bit, where people think it's hillarious to make fun of someone that just died. One month is too soon to start cracking jokes, 1 year is more like it imo, for a lighthearted joke that is.

That's the joy of the internet, you can be who you want to be without any consequence.

There is a place for those type of jokes, and while my sense of humour has me going straight to the darkest depths of hell already, I don't think is here is necessesarily the place.

No they didn't, because Darwin had an established reputation and science and British society were all ready was his ideas expressed in On the Origin of Species.

Right thoughts at the right time and good evidence to back them up is the lesson of Darwin's success, you could pay attention. You seem to post without thinking - that's not being honest, it's merely being thoughtless.

Yet you feel able to judge Jade Goody as a person based on some manipulative glossy media coverage?

    Exactly. Remember my previous post?

Jade's problem, in short, was that she spoke without thinking; without considering how this affected people's experience of her. As such you, like many others, formed a low opinion of her.

Yet did she not do exactly what you pride yourself on doing: just calling it as she saw it?

    Oh, and:

What does that prove? That many people found the sensationalist coverage of her cancer inappropriate? Blame the media and blame the buying public, not the person dying of cancer.

I agree with most of what you have said, and i'm also indifferent about her death. I just find it a shame that a 27 year old mother of 2 has passed away, i feel particularly sorry for her children.

Although I do have to say I find your above statement a bit bemusing considering your level of open mindedness.

People joke about everything and anything. Cancer is no different. How can you define what is acceptable to joke about and what isn't. So Cancer is not ok? What about Aids? Ebola? Influenza?

Either everything is acceptable to joke about or nothing is.

Depends on how personal it gets, no? If I joke about cancer, it's dark humour. If I joke about your cancer, it is not so funny anymore. If I laugh at your cancer, then it is offensive.

To a certain extent yes, however, the statement i was referring to was suggesting it is not OK to joke about cancer...ever.

My point is really, if something is funny, it's funny.

I always think back to South Park in situations like this, they make fun of everything and anything, including themselves...and it's funny.

I guess I just don't like being told what I can and can't laugh at :)

There was a long article in the Guardian a few months ago about stand-up comedians and 'where the line is' but i can't seem to dig it out.

Considering a lot of people still disagree with Darwin, and the fact that only recently has some of his stuff been made factual, I find that hard to believe.

Yet you feel able to judge Major as a person based on some forum posts written in seconds?

And to think that the ones against me are stating I made jokes, just makes them more idiotic, quote a post with me making a joke about JG. I haven't created any jokes, none at all, I have been stating what I feel about her and the whole situation.

You could say that about most jokes that we all laugh at, including you. Rape, Iraq, George Bush, Fat people, Thin people, Disabled people, Murder, Fraud (phonejacker for example).

Everything bad in the world, can be made into a joke, and you'll laugh at it. But if it happens to you, it's the total opposite, and becomes offensive. Westovski is making decent points, it's either acceptable, or it isn't. And it's up to that individual to feel if it's offensive, or it isn't. Like I've stated before, everyone is different, period.

I could laugh at someone that has AIDS, I could say "That's what you get for ****ing a monkey" and have a little laugh. But if I had AIDS, and that was said to me, I'd end up getting into a lot of trouble, and put in a police cell.

The term "*****" is offensive to some black people, but it's also acceptable and used widely with other black people. Even white people use the word as a name, it's all about what you think is acceptable. And if you think something is unacceptable, it doesn't mean I also think the same.

fair point. perhaps i should point out that my current standpoint is biased due to circumstances, and also refine my statement to something along the lines of:

"cancer is a horrifyingly painful and traumatic disease. you do not express glee at someone's demise from it!"

as far as i can see he is attacking your logic and argument, not you as a person. there's a big difference.

Depends who that person is, and what your opinion is of them.

It's a harsh statement, but it's true, and you cannot deny that, period.

I've had family members that have died from it, I know what it is, I know the feeling of it, one minute the person is getting better, the next day they have a few days to live. And if someone hated or disliked the family members and they stated they didn't care about them, then that's a fair statement.

Point taken, I didn't push the matter as I suspected you had some personal connection to the illness.

Might I add, I also completely agree with your amended quote, then it is no longer humour, it's hate. Which is entirely different by all accounts.

Whatever your connection is, I hope things go well for you. It's a terrible, terrible thing. :(

Yet it is fact. Know your history.

You feel that you know Jade well enough to judge her as a person. I'm saying that by your own argument, you can't.

No; you look at them as total scum who should have their balls cut off. I look at them as severely damaged, immature (and hence, self-centered) individuals who should be contained by any means necessary (I know that cutting off balls does not work). What you are basically saying is what I'm saying: it depends on how personal the joke gets. Joking about cancer and death is just black humour. Joking about your cancer and death is not funny. Glee at your cancer and death is unacceptable.

Each person is defined by their actions. They are preceived and judged according to their actions. You may express glee at someone's death of cancer, because your perception of them leads you to not like them very much. Other people will base their perception of you on that act, and decide that they don't like you very much.

In practical terms, yes, you can laugh at an AIDS victim, and in response he may punch your lights out. Witnesses to the event may judge that is fair do's. You may call a black man "*****" and get beaten up as a racist --other people may say you had it coming. You may post crass, inconsiderate remarks on this forum, because that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. Others here may regard you as a ****.

You don't consider how what you do or say makes other people perceive you. Jade didn't; we know how well that worked out for her: "Kill the pig". How is it working out for you?

Sorry, I wasn't aiming it at Nexxo, my bad. :)

Which is why I said this below it.

But that could happen with ALL humour, regardless of what it was about, bloody hell.

If someone had a serious phobia of Sweetcorn, and I joked about that and they heard me, they could also knock me out.

you're sort of condemning yourself with your own arguments. basically, it all boils down to showing an insensitive attitude to other people's maladies. it's pretty much never acceptable. you can apply it to whatever. personalise the ridicule and the social norms automatically make you a total *******.

The way people state themselves on here, it sounds like they never, ever, have a laugh, or crack a dark joke, which is impossible, and any sick jokes that is created that you find funny, you'll laugh at it, regardless of people's feelings.

It's how things are in the world I'm afraid, accept it or STFU tbh.

Maybe it's to add to their reputation on the forum, create them a bigger ego on the internet, who knows, but I don't care about reputation. You can build a reputation up for 40 years, and in 1 second, it's destroyed. Being honest is the best way, and people in this thread are not being honest, mods, forum posters, whatever, if they want to be fake, then be fake, I don't care, you're just a username to me.

nobody is saying that they don't make dark jokes about dire situations; i actually have a very morbid sense of humour. what i try to avoid, however, is personally directed jokes - they just aren't very funny or acceptable. yes sure, i have been caught out once or twice, but that doesn't mean i embrace the idea. i agree that there are oversensitive individuals that find something to complain about regardless of what you say.
