Wow, it seems worse than I first thought, hope you roommate's brother is ok. I just booked my first ever holiday to Japan last night (before any of this happened) and I'll be heading to Narita as well.
This is terrible news in a year of terrible natural disasters. Anyone following the Mayan calender, with whats happened so far this year and next year being what it is, are probably bricking themselves right now.
that's a big one.. yeah felt aftershocks here in cali before but they are short- can't imagine several minutes =E
best thoughts to those in japan. my elderly aunt in yokohama is safe. will speak to her by phone this afternoon.
# 1841: The situation at the nuclear reactor at Fukushima seems to be worsening. Japanese authorities are now to release radioactive vapour to ease pressure, AP news agency reports. Engineers are trying to fix the cooling system to the main reactor, damaged in the quake. Im looking at the live feed: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698
I've actually been watching the news the WHOLE day. It's now 70 aftershocks and the reactor could still blow at the plant.
2139: Radiation levels at the damaged Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant are continuing to rise. The Jiji Press news agency says the levels are eight times above normal. Its report also cites a ministry official as saying there is a "possibility of a radioactive leak". ---Been watching it too.
A little more info on the US Navy's involvement here. Also attests to the power of tsunamis. Two SSN's moored in Guam broke their ties and were temporarily drifting.
# 2149: The Kyodo news agency is now citing a safety panel as saying that the radiation level inside one of the reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant is 1,000 times higher than normal.
Now apparently at 1000x the norm.... I just hope to God that it doesn't blow as it shall cause wide destruction in that area Ninja'd ....
im watching it now... Just hope that they can cool the reactors in time, and if it does blow that the radioactivity is contained within the safety of the concrete slabs.....
# 2153: The pressure inside one of the six Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant has built up because the cooling system was damaged by the earthquake. The heat produced by the nuclear reaction inside the core still needs to be dissipated even after a shutdown. If the outage in the cooling system persists, eventually radiation could leak out into the environment, and, in the worst case, could cause a reactor meltdown, experts say.
2204: Matt, from Tokyo, writes: "I don't think these aftershocks have been reported enough. Each of these aftershocks have a bigger magnitude than the main quake felt in Tokyo." Have Your Say Perhaps this is just a forequake????
They have got the reactor cooler online. I have the news behind me and they've just said that "Reactor is operating at twice the normal pressure."
Thats some good news then atleast for now Ps what site are you getting info from? im using the bbc site btw
