Hello everybody! It's been month or so when I finished my last project, so I think it really is time to start a new one! I managed to get two Pentium 2-processors (not quite sure which model are they) and FOUR motherboards (including one DOUBLEPROCESSOR) and now I'm about to build an homeserver. I didn't post this to project logs yet since I haven't actually done anything yet... But I'd like to hear all your ideas, what actually is most important in homeservers? Reliability, silence, or something else? And what about OS? Linux simply IS best in server-use, but I can't use it too well. Is it time to learn? Now I'll continue testing if all mobos work, processors are 100% OK PS: Did I mention all that hardware came for free?
We have a liftoff! Dual-processor-system works! two P2s at 260MHz and 256MB of sdram, I think I'll overclock those, but this is good start as I had no idea if mobo works or not....
imo with home severs silence is golden, because there prob going to be running 24/7 and if you can hear it, it will annoy. also since its low spec, it mite be cool to go all passive cooling.
wheeeeeee! It booted up as 2*466MHz This is gonna be one damn nice homeserver It'll propably even run some gameservers... We'll see.
Err I faced an awful truth, I have no webspace for my pics I used to have my pics at nic.fi, but it doesn't work nomore as nic hasn't excist for last five years... Got to find new place... I counted how many mobos I have currently. Ten.
personally, i wouldnt worry about how many mobos you can get going, and id worry about how much your server is actualy going to do, and also id worry about harddrive space, as a server has 1 of 2 or 2 functions, that is to serve data, or to host a active program... beit files to host, or a gameserver or host application?
HDD-space is always problem of some sort... There won't be need for huge HDD (like 200GB or so) but 80GB would be ok.. I'll cope with less, but it would be nice to have backups on server too. Currently I have 250MBs of pics on my personal server, so it won't be an issue.
mmh. I bought an used 400MHz P2... Costed 2euros and should be shipped next monday I hope it works.. Tho' it isn't that bad price even for decorative piece of silicon...
dont p2's have massive heatsinks? I was working on a slot p2 266 system the other day adn the heatsink was HUGE. its not as refined as todays heatsinks but certainly it was big, althought not a huge amount of surface area. I recon it weighed in at near a kilo. It also had a small fan blowing on part of it 2. Anyway, a new heatsink will prob run passive.
small and lets say wood. Atleast right now that is what im doing. I have an amd k-6 450mhz that im turning into a file and print server. That way everyone doesnt have to have a printer. The motherboard i got for mine is baby at so small is easy. My goal in mine it to be small and quiet. I dont want it hugh, loud or over complicated. So far the case is a 11" x 9.5" x 9" wood box. IM using 1/2" plywood that since some of it is junky im going cover it with bondo to smooth it out. Those are my ideas since that is what im doing. Oh and OS wise linux is probally the best for your system but it depends on your linux knowledge and what the rest of your computers are. For instance if they are all windows then you think abuot using windows 98 striped down. I personally am having problems getting linux to talk to windows computers.
