Everytime I run a Java app- at least every time I run Azureus, Limewire or Kagiru Sudoku (all Java) Java end ups haveing problems.

Sudoku- runs fine for a while, but then starts to run amazingly slow. It's not a very complex app, the .jar is only 371KB but after about 15min it becomes quite un-responsive. Close the app, and the system freezes.

Azureus- to my knowledge, this one runs excellent, until I close Azureus and then problems start.

Limewire- I wish I could use limewire, but it only works for a few minutes after I first start it, then the program becomes slow and un-responsive. The Window takes forever to refresh itself. As usual, close the app, and the system freezes.

When the PC freezes, the same exact sequence of events takes place, with about the same amount of time between each phase. I'd estimate the time to 10-15 sec. I close an app, everything continues as normal, then everything but the cursor becomes unresponsive, the cursor then quits responding, the PC speaker (the one used during a POST and not much else) beeps and I hit the reset button. Windows proceedes to load fine as if it didn't just kick me off- except the big important file I was working on and didn't save ('cause normally PCs don't suddenly ock up) is gone.

My first suspicion was RAM. So I downloaded Memtest86+ v1.65 and loaded it onto a floppy, I let my PC test the RAM overnight, or for about 14 hours. 29 passes later and memtest reported 0 errors. Just for good measure, I rebooted the PC this morning and gave it another hour and 2 passes later and there were still 0 errors. I was really hopeing for a good excuse to upgrade to some better RAM. :( Is 3-3-3-8 timeing good or bad? I don't believe it's good, but I believe it's easy to find RAM with better timeing?

So today I removed all traces of my old copy of Java- which happened to be 5.0 update 5. I then attempted to use the net installer- that one failed to install. I fetched the offline version and it installed fine. I loaded up a Java app- my Sudoku, as usual the PC eventually froze. I rebooted and loaded Azureus, same symptoms. :wallbash:

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could possibly be causing this problem?

it sounds like a stack problem.

but the net installer sounds like an underlying cause. what do you use to download it? FF/II/Opera?

Firefox. After the net installer failed, I used FF to download the offline installer, which installed fine- but didn't stop any of the problems with my Java applications.

Subscribing to the thread as I have very similar problems. I uninstalled Limewire about 6 weeks ago as there was little point having it sat on my machine when the thing just doesn't work.

PS I had the same issues with the net install using FF & dl'ed the offline version & installed it with no problems, didn't help with the Limewire issues though.

Have you since tried uninstalliung all versions of Java on your computer or running the Java autoupdate service?

Try running the online install through IE

Have tried running the online install through IE, it fails. Prior to this, I tried to the online install via the download from Firefox, it failed. Prior to that, I tried using Java's autoupdate service- based solely on the aperance of installer, I believe it to be the same as the online install from the website, and that ofcourse failed too. I don't believe there is any problem with Firefox but meerly a problem with the online installer itself.

Lately, I have been busy fetching free AV programs, and running them. I've let AdAware have a go at my PC, and I've used Easy claner to make sure Java didn't leave anything behind in the registry. I have manually deleted the documents&settings/me/appliationdata/sun (contained some Java stuff) folder from my PC. I can not find any other traces of Java on my PC, I still need to reboot one more time, and after that I shall attempt to install Java again.

I've been having similar problems -
It all started when I let the Java auto update run a few months ago -
Since then, any website that uses Java or any local java app will run fine for a while and then completely freeze my machine. A hard boot usually does the trick, but since then, I haven't been able to play chicken invaders :(

After following all the steps listed above, I visited java.com through IE, which directs you to the online installer. Once again, that failed. So I used a copy of the offline installer, and now everything *appears to be running fine. I still hate Sun and Java. . .

*edit: Java is still makeing my PC crash. :wallbash: Should I dare attempt a reformat in hope of fixing whatever could possibly be wrong or does Sun just need to get their act togother?

Defragged the drives in my PC, rebooted afterwards. Launched two Java apps (Sudoku and Limewire) closed both apps, system crashed.

I manually un-installed everything Java related and then installed java again. Still crashes. Problems started when I went to the latest version of Java. (And why should I re-load windows? Just because MS made an unstable OS that doesn't handle app crashes very well and Sun mad an unstable JVM environment shouldn't make it so that I have to spend most of a day of my time rebuilding my system. Instead - I will choose not to use websites that use java because they crash my machine. If those vendors want my business, the will repair the unstable software (buy putting pressure on Sun.))

    Not here.

I uninstalled Java again, re-downloaded the offline install using Internet Exploder, reinstalled & things seem much better, though still not perfect. I don't know if there's been a minor update to Java or it's just coincidence.
