Couple of JWs showed up a few weeks ago, and my dad answered the door. They asked "Are you worried about the future" to which my dad replied "No, I don't believe in worrying about the future, it's against my religion". They buggered off very quickly after that. :)

These guys who I thought were JW's came round in suits once when I lived in Lincoln. Turns out there weren't. They had colourful t-shirts under suits jackets and trainers on. I didn't say anything to them, gave one a pound and he gave me this book called 'Easy Journey to other Planets'. It was about beaming yourself through space, somehow. Got bored after the first chapter.

I used to get a fair few turning up on my door until one halloween someone hung a string of skulls on the door knocker. That was about 2 years ago and we've not had any knocking here since :)

Waddup, Mr Pot. Have you met my good friend Mr Kettle?

It seriously crushes my spirit that you don't see the irony in calling for "racists" to be locked up. Just...wow.

I wasnt stating that Jw's are a seperate race just that they have a right to thier beliefs as long as said beliefs dont result in abuse to others and thier belief system or religion, verbally abusing them is in a way a kind of racism towards them and unaceptable in my opinion, and no Im not a troll as you put it bent just voicing my opinion No offence meant to you Bent btw and I hope none is taken

I had some old ladies come round one time. Not sure if they were JW's though.

Anyway, they showed me some artistic renders of what heaven will look like - my memory is hazey but I remember a smiling couple surrounded by birds and trees. They were also stroking a lion.

I said I don't believe in God and I think that put them off a bit. They came back a few weeks later. I hid.

    I didn't call you a troll GOUDG, I called you a hypocrite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot_calling_the_kettle_black

I just meant that calling for a group of people to be locked up or silenced because of their beliefs is discrimination. No matter who they are, it's discrimination. What you're trying to prevent - the abuse of Jehovah's Witnesses - is also discrimination. I agree that it's unpleasant, but discriminating to prevent discrimination is even more unpleasant, and illogical to boot.

TL;DR: if you call for prejudiced people to be locked up, you're being as bad as them.

Besides, it's actually better to have racist people and other bigots in society, free to express their beliefs - that way, it's easier for people to rationally assess their claims and poke holes in their arguments, easier for people to see exactly how and why they're mistaken. If "racists" were just some mysterious bunch of oppressed people sat in jail, they'd attract a lot of sympathy, glamour and curiosity.

I've only had JW's approach me in the street as I was going to a lecture. I thought they wanted directions. Nice enough old ladies, but I left the pamphlet in the lecture theatre anyway.

To which I can ask... "How do magnets work?". Sorry.

Thankyou for saying that before I did... "HOW DARE THEY BE ANGRY THAT I INSULTED THEM! OFFICER ARREST THEM!" doesn't go down to well these days.

I don't like religion, in the slightest and even when it's brought up (especially at work) they always get *grumble* that is me disproving.

That said I've sat down and spoken to a Jo'vo before and he was a lovely chap... seemed honest enough, caring, considerate and damn polite. I said "Look don't mean to be rude, but I don't believe in a god and I'm a man of science, so you'll get no-where with me" didn't say it rudely and the gent simply went "Ok, no problem... thanks for your time anyway!" shook my hand, wished him a good day and off he trot to the next person. I can't be angry at that... hell I'm not angry at people like him. All he was trying to do was bring what makes him happy to others, sure I don't believe in it but I'm going to turn round to this nice guy and tell him why he's wrong. I only generally get an attitude when I hear someone make a statement like

"All those who don't worship god, will go to hell"

or if someone directly questions why I don't believe in god. I don't get, arsey, I just tell them the truth... generally it ends up offending Judo-Christian's as telling them "Adam and Eve had two sons, one killed the other then went to the next village to find a wife, go figure?" seems to enrage them slightly.

Religion is always a nightmare of a topic to handle. At work I have a Christian lady I work closely with, no problems with her usually, until she talks about "supernatural events" that I can explain with cold, hard, logic. Drives me mad. :brrr:

Word. As said earlier, it is very different from door-to-door sales.

It depends how you do it, though, what you advocate. Do you try to reason with bigots, to explain to them why their prejudices are illogical and unfounded, or do you verbally abuse them, try to obstruct them in their activities, and petition to have them censored? The former is the way to go, in my opinion. The latter is disgusting. I don't know how your group works; I've seen ostensibly-liberal people go both ways on this.

Ok I have to admit your right on that I was wrong in saying they should be arrested Having to deal with idiots like the Edl,Bnp, And Efp everyday is difficult and frustrating and occassionally I tend to loose my way and make Some Comments I shouldnt, but I in no way apologize for my standing against bigotry just for the arrest comment that was un-called for and wrong, but I dont back down to anyone Being born of True Irish stock I always stay true to the values of honesty and integrity if others dont like that tough like it or lump it simple as

Agreed, I don't mind when they're nice but when they blabber on about going to hell and won't let you get a word in- that's when I drive them away with my atheist powers of logic and tell them to bugger off.

    Leeches :sigh:

Tragically it isn't as simple as that. you and I have had this chat before.

BNP/EDL campaigners are no longer capable of holding a rational thought. If they are it's so wrapped up in malace and hate for the "non-whites" that it's intolerable to even speak to them alot of the time. I've tried... heck knows I've tried reasoning endlessly with them, but it doesn't work. What the do understand is violence... which is tragic. But it works...

"If <group mentioned> was a doctor and you were dying... would you refuse treatment knowing if you did, it meant your death?"

See I love the above line because it's not a threat... it's a "What if?" and the racists brain works perfectly like that... "What if a black gets my job?" "What if a Chinese breaks into my home?" ... brilliant. Tells them to shut it and stop being a loser.

Most of the time, the rest of them... well... Warhammer 40K has servitors... We should probably look the same way.

With science, duh. Believe it or not one thing Witnesses aren't are fundamentalists creationists. They don't think the world was created in seven literal days. They don't run screaming from science in general.

Ehh...it may vary from place to place. The last one I had was a science skeptic who complained about the way TV always talks about the theory of evolution "like it's an established fact". I kinda turned off a bit when he said that :sigh:

@BRAWL, I see your point. I still maintain that you can't be hard-fisted and try to censor bigots, though. I guess the next best recourse is addressing the causes of bigotry: asking where such beliefs arise and why, and trying to prevent the things that lead people to have that mindset.

I need to start reading criminology/sociology papers again, I don't know enough about this **** anymore.
