anyone using the gorillapod? what do you think about them? im thinking to getting this one with the ballhead. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Joby-Gorill...TWOC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1340638198&sr=8-5 this is due to my Paris trip last week, because it was business trip, i only bought minimal photography stuff because only have 1 day of sight seeing planned on Saturday. but ended up with free time to go up Eiffel tower and Tour Montparnasse in the evenings. at those moments, i could REALLY used a tripod. the idea is to have gorillapod just tucked in my bag, and be available wherever i go. worth the investment?
I've got one and I often take it with me on city trips with friends. It's lightweight and rolls up so you can stuff it into a normal backpack. I use it for group shots and a few night shots. I use it because I don't want the hassle of carrying a tripod when walking all day. Also my friends don't have the patience to wait for me to setup a tripod. The one I've got is the SLR Zoom, and it will definatly not hold a SLR with a telezoom. I put my 5D with battery grip, 24-70F2.8 on a manfrotto ballhead on top of it and it moves quite a bit but it holds when wrapped around a vertical (think traffic sign) post. But it will move so don't leave it hanging for minutes. It's not a bad idea to secure your camera with a second strap so it doesn't drop to the floor. So you need to shoot wide and then crop later as it will definatly move. It does work fine on a flat surface when you roll up the legs to take the weight of the lens but then you might as well use your backup or sweather to support it. So yeah.. it's nice to have and it will get the job done when you don't want to bring a tripod. I would suggest getting the Focus for anything heavier then a NEX or small dSLR.
This applies to so many things in life... I have a GorillaPod with a 'standard' head, useful thing though also frustrating at times since it often refuses to sit level until you beat it remorselessly a few times. I'm tempted to sew or glue a metal plate & mounting stud to a bean bag, would make alot of sense for many shots really...
You mean like this...? Been very tempted to buy one for a long time, never quite been able to justify it but it would make so many shots a lot easier. Especially for video...
Son of a *****! $20 isn't a bad price really ( my FZ-28 would go well with the red model ), I'll have to think about it myself too- +rep for that. You see, this is why I should patent all the crazy & awesome ideas I have sometimes... Certainly, but what are the odds of picking up the camera and forgetting or dropping the bag- just a little extra security and prevents the camera sliding around on the bag too.
Wow, what a great idea. May have to try and get one of them in for a future Custom Kit....lets hope they don't ask for it back.
Follow up ( all your thread are belong to me ), just ordered a Red Pod from Dixons- they have the yellow, red and green for between £6.99 & £8.99 which is just over half the price they are listed for ( in $ on the Pod website ). Got me a red for £7.99 with free postage...
Well, update on my end, I've ordered gorillapod slr zoom with ballhead from amazon. Although it is expensive, I thought it would be more versatile than the beanbag solution. Keep us updated on how you get on with the alternative solution.
after a few weeks with Gorillapod, only used it once, i was hoping to get more use out of it. it's perfectly sized for carrying around in a backpack, but sticks out quite a bit when i want to travel light with just a sling bag. on the single use, i managed this shot: using this setup. it's steady enough to hold the camera for a sharp shot at 1/6s. also tried a video, and vibration was minimal.
