    Hi All

As the title suggests, I have just purchased a Crucial MX100 512gb.

Having never owned an SSD before I was wondering if there's any 'crucial' info I should know about installing windows on it and general upkeep of the drive.

It may be just like any other drive but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

A phrase I often hear alongside SSDs is "Trim". What is it and do I need to bother?

    Thanks

    George

Just make sure your SATA settings in BIOS is on AHCI mode before installing, Windows takes care of the rest!

Hi, one thing to remember is not to defrag your new drive, SSD's don't need to be defragged and will just shorten life span of drive.

One other thing I have read about is not allowing your PC to sleep as some SSD drives do not like it and can cause problems have a look here http://tinyurl.com/my63bp6

I don't even let mine sleep any more just switch it off because start up is so quick

Disable hibernation. It will also free up a few gb of space on the drive

Is you MoBo the same one that is in your sig ? Because if it is then it should support AHCI, its been around since the days of Vista.

Windows 7 and 8 are supposed to detect an SSD and disable defragging by default. But always worth a check just to be sure.

I don't shut down my PC ever always in sleep mode. Have SSD for the OS and running for almost 2 years I think.

Yes it is AHCI, what I meant is it doesn't have any other setting to my knowledge where as new board have a different mode?? maybe I'm getting confused.

But yeah as far I know it's in AHCI. Where might I look to check for this?

you still get the defrag program, but instead of defragging it runs the trim command

AFAIK it would be on the integrated peripherals BIOS screen, under the heading RAID mode.
