    WOW! :jawdrop:

Totally epic! Didnt know much about the series prior to playing it, but already want to run through it again and do all the side missions!

    Just about to start ME2!

(Did this merit a thread? Who knows!)

I know mate! Incredible! Ive played through ME1 about 5 times now, ME2 probably about 5-6.
A bit of advice, play through ME1 again BEFORE me2, theres more to unlock, also you can carry over a fully levelled character, that has bonus potential in itself.

    Totally did merit a thread!

    Glad you enjoyed it.

I've got both games lined up ready to play. :)

Do you recommend keyboard & mouse or controller (360 in my case)?

I had a brief session with ME1 a while back and couldn't get it configured quite the way I wanted it, but maybe it's worth persisting with a mouse.

Having played (and owning) both on the 360 and PC, i wouldn't really say that the PC controls are notably better... they did a rather good job with the radial menu system on the 360 and it does what it's supposed to rather well.

However, as expected from having access to way more buttons and a more versatile interface in the PC, they managed to get a rather nice "Combat Pause Menu" which is what you'd expect from the PC version, which makes it seem to allow more tactical play as it has a KoTOR feel to it. Another bonus is the fact that you can now separately assign move commands to your squadmates meaning you can send them to roughly flank, draw fire or create a crossfire zone instead of stupidly bumbling about fighting with each other as to who gets the cover.

On a related side note, be prepared for a brief period of discomfort when you switch to Mass Effect 2. They stupidly tweaked the controls to a more "Gears of War" style setup with the "Combat Menu" moved to Shift and "Sprint/Use/Action" mapped to Spacebar. Sounds like nothing but it took me a while to not constantly pause when i wanted to run, and run out of cover when i wanted to pause :duh:. Would have been easy if they'd split the"Sprint" from the "Use/Action" since you could then map it back to ME1 controls.

Anyhow, enough about my bitching. Yes ME was a fantastic game, yes you will definitely enjoy ME2... apart from the stuff they changed :p. From a storytelling point of view, ME2 is a much better game, pretty much in a league above the first ME. However from a gameplay and mechanics perspective i do miss the feel of the original ME and in some ways enjoyed it more than the sequel.

Definitely. Mass Effect 1 is awesome. Mass Effect 2 is just unbelievably good. Up there with my other favourites, like Hitman: Blood Money, Thief 2 and Deus Ex.

I'm in the same boat, just finished ME1 for the second time last night, and I have already ME2 ready to launch.

Will just have to finish a paper first, damn uni, taking the time meant to be used on ME2.

Bought ME1 months back (a lilttle after it came out on Steam), played it for about 5-10mins and thought "What a god-awful piece of crap console port"

    Oh how wrong I was.....

Got bored of all the games I was playing a couple months back, decided WTH, i'll just play it cuz i'm bored. Once I got a handle on the controls and actions, that was it... played it religously over the next couple of days, and have finished it a number of times.

Gameplay is great and the story is awesome.

Unfortunately the same thing happened to me for ME2, the start was just horrible (controls, many cutscenes), but I know that when I actually get around to playing it I will enjoy it immensely.

Cannot agree more with this thread :) In fact it's making me want to replay 1 and 2 again. I probably will at some point in preparation for ME3, but still got some time to go til that comes out :D

I highly recommend reading the books too if you want to get into the universe further :thumb:

Not having a go here, but could you justify how Mass Effect 2 in any way approaches the greatness of Deus Ex? I'm genuinely curious to understand it, because having played both I'd say that the former is pretty mediocrity and the latter is genius in byte form.

Played both ME1 and 2 and they were just ok to me. I wouldn't think of replaying them especially with so many games on my backlog. I just wasn't fond of how they played with keyboard/mouse. It felt like it was developed for console first and developed for PC but 85% into tweeking it for mouse keyboard they said that's good enough and stopped. I may be totally wrong in that assumption but that's just how it felt to me. Either way it negatively affect on how much I liked the game.

I will give them thumbs up for being something other than modern military type games. However, I actually liked for example; Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, Bishock, STALKER, (games I played in recent years) more the the ME series.

You can't have lesbian sex with an alien in DE.

I'm currently playing through ME1 for the first time. Great game, but there are some pretty annoying things all the same, combat being one of them. For some reason my squad mates insist on staying back even though I tell them to attack. This constantly puts me in the firing line and for some reason Shepard consistently seems to be the most vulnerable character.

Then there's the idiotic equipment/inventory system, which doesn't get better with the lack of a manual for the STEAM version. This gives me a very hard time figuring out what to keep and what to sell off.

Oh, and you have zero possibility of watching your squad mates' stats unless they're currently part of your squad. This can make it pretty hard picking the right squad for the task at hand. Of course I could write that all down on a piece of paper, but honestly, who does that these days. And if they managed to circumvent this issue for the equipment (accessing the locker for every character) this should have been possible with the stats as well.

I've got a few more minor niggles, but the above are my primary gripes with this game.

    Still enjoy the ride though...

I admit and will say beforehand that I should probably re-play DE before leaping in here, but there’s no time... I must run my mouth now!!

    What do you mean?
Comparing the 1st game of a partially dubious series (DE2) against the second game in a so far unblemished (despite interplanetary mining) series?
Or is your comparison just pound for pound DE against ME2??
Deus ex... Although utterly awesome, does not quite have the edge on the visual design and artistic depth, I’m not saying... "The graphics are better" but in terms of the scope of design and execution of a cohesive and diverse universe it’s very different. There in the word "different" lies the key... They are both epics but inherently different.
DE has the edge in terms of technical progression and environmental interaction but there is a visual finesse in the ME universe that is something untouched by most other games, it’s so cohesive and palpable, you can almost feel the weight and the heat of the omega station! DE has some great locations but it just can’t stand next to ME2.
ME2 may have muddied its own water with its shaving of the inventory system and scaled down choice available in terms of weapon customisation and squad appearance since ME1 but despite its simplicity it still has the edge. Maybe a fairer comparison would be DE against ME1?
But that’s not your point! I can’t make my mind up and both games are stone cold classics... JUST classics! So maybe the point should be why compare different but unquestionably excellent genre defining games... Just play them and love them!!!

I never completed a replay of Deus Ex as I always lost interest.

I've played Mass Effect 2 through three times now and intend to play it just before Mass Effect 3.

So, Mass Effect 2 must be more fun that Deus Ex by my logic.

By the way, how awesome is the 'Lair of the Shadow Broker' DLC?! Mass Effect 2 at its finest IMHO.

"Lair" "Kazumi's" and "Overlord" are some of the best examples of DLC ever, its almost as if they created it with the main part of the game, cut them out and then thought these are so good we can charge people for them seperatley!!!! :D
