I feel a little bad about this now, but it was all the hype surrounding Vista. When I built my current desktop it was with WinXP Pro 64, but drivers for 64 bit were a nightmare to find at that point, and I got more and more frustrated. The fact that I had to buy the more expensive 'pro" version to get multiple processor support didn't halep any either. About this time the little bits of info about vista were coming our pre-release and the more I heard about it the less I wanted anything to do with it. I started with Ubuntu 6.06 for the AMD64, then went to 6.10 on a different machine (which felt like a step backwards), and now I'm using 7.04. I've toyed with a couple different distros, but I keep coming back to Ubuntu.

If you like Gentoo (and I know I do!) Give Linux from scratch a try! Tried it myself on a spare. Be warned, takes forever to compile everything on an old P3 400 with only 128MB of ram, but runs insanely fast! Other than that I use Debian Etch on my laptop and my main rig dual boots Win Xp and Gentoo. Even my daughter's computer will dual boot XP and Ubuntu. (She wanted to play the penguin games daddy had.)

LFS lacks 1 thing all modern distros need IMHO, a package managers...

    /me remembers the dependency hell...

I tried linux from scratch, but it didn't really 'teach you the way linux works' like it promised, it was basically
"At boot, normally, udev [??] looks for devices and builds the device nodes [???] dynamically. In this case we don't have a udev yet but we can start by copying the local machine's one as a base set:
$ some command which isn't really explained and has loads of screwy parameters
    $ some more commands"
Anyway, that was to see if I could build a small portable distro to go on an old Muvo mp3 player I no longer really use.

Xubuntu still has loads of bloat, yes, but it's under 4 gig installed, which is fine by me, it has a dedicated 24gig partition so no problem. What does annoy me a bit is that some packages seem to have stupid dependencies. For example I can't remove one of the games (say Mahjongg) without uninstalling the lot. Also, attempting to remove some packages seems to require uninstalling "ubuntu-desktop" and other kind of important bits.

Incidentally the mirc via wine is because I have a bunch of scripts [automated channel management and such] I haven't gotten round to botifying yet. I'll give XChat and such a look when I get a chance - irssi I've used in the past, it's nice but the scripting is a bit unintuitive.

Ubuntu Desktop and many others like that are meta packages can be safely removed. I've spent ten minutes trying to describe a meta package and couldn't come up with a concise simple way of putting it. So in the words of Ubuntu...

Problem with the meta package is, if you uninstall it, it uninstalls all unused dependencies, which include your GUI...

pidgin's IRC handling is a bit lacking IMO (even with the irchelper extension), but yes I know ;)

    wow..so many people use Linux.
I have tried it a week ago but it's just isn't up to my expectation and there are problems with it too.

So..the first thing that made me try because i like to fiddle with stuff and i just saw the beryl desktop and was like holy ****! that's beast!
then i downloaded the latest ubuntu...tried it...and the first problem was i had a 8800gt and it didn't have any drivers...so the first 64bit didn't install.
i had to use a 86x ubuntu...no problem....after i installed everything, i was looking at stuff, forums and others...installed driver through envy..it worked well.
i had to later reinstall 2 times because of language compatibility..and it didn't display like the way i wanted to...and SOMEHOW...linux changed my D drive...the logical partition..to a primary partition(C drive) without destroying the data...so when i installed back to XP after i was frustrated by the language support(chinese acutally), i had my windows files in D drive and datas in C drive..it was SOO annoy.

i still want to use ubuntu..but i like office 2007..and my other games that can't work well in linux..so..i now backed up all my files in an external hdd..formatted my internal hdd..reinstalled vista..and will enjoy it as much as linux.

    xD
